Hey zone,
I've been wanting to tackle various patches of surface rust inside the engine bay and out on the body. I'm a little apprehensive as I've not done it before, and was wondering if anyone had some good steps for me to follow and products to use? I've bought the colour coded paint, primer and laq finish. I've also got some Rustins rust converter I was planning to use...
Any help appreciated!

I am by no means a pro or anything but the method i used on the lower part of my drivers door was as follows:
1- sand all rust off, also sand the surrounding area
2- Apply the “rust killer” or Rustins as you mentioned
3- wait for this to dry/ cure and sand with anything above 800 grit sand paper to smooth it off
4- Primer using a zinc based primer, 2 coats- bit more expensive but I’m sure worth it in the long run!
5-Lightly sand
6-spray two coats of the base coat, I’ve found if done well then there is no need to sand this layer. To blend with the rest of the surrounding area i give the can a bit of a “flick” at the end of each stroke off to the side, seems to work!
7- spray 2-3 coats of clear coat.
8- if the paint has dried and looks sort of misty/dull lightly wet sand the area with 1500+ grit sandpaper and then polish.
Hope this helps. I’m only an amateur and just combining things I’ve heard from people to something i think sounds right!
