Bit off topic, Boat Gel Coat Polishing

Anyone got a boat here and has any clue? Cant be bothered joining a boating forum! Haha

I just bought this and i think its gel coat and its really porus, faded and patchy as you can see in the photo.. how would i go about making it really shiny and stay shiny? Ive got use of a pnumatic rotary polisher so ill need pads etc too.. a point in the right direction would be great!

If you think its gone porous you might be better checking for osmosis on the fibreglass layer before doing anything else. Look for little blisters in the gelcoat.

Unfortunately like cars red is the worst colour for fading and there isn't much you can do short of keeping it out of the sun as much as possible. UV protective clear topcoats will help.

Other than that treat it like any painted surface, rotary mop with compound on it, polishing compound, then wax it. Mould release wax is a good choice for boat hulls.

You wont need to work too hard to restore the colour but I dont know anything about the porous issues.

I would be ordering some Gtechniq P1 polish for use with the rotary and use something like Chemical Guys Hexlogic pads or even the Gtechniq pads. I would say a polish pad or a medium compounding pad would be more than adequate. You need to be careful not to build up too much heat on the surface but the P1 is specifically designed to keep heat to a minimum and is regularly used on yachts.

You could then top it off with a UV resistant sealant. The best of the best is Gtechniq C1 which is used on superyachts throughout the world. Alternatively you could look at Wolfs Chemicals Bodywrap but it wont have the durability.
