Best way to clean up filthy engine

As title says folks I picked up a cheap little 2 door but the engine and engine bay are manky what's the best way to clean it up without removing it from the car

not sure if the best, but ive found it excellent...autoglym engine de greaser spray, cover any electricals with clingfilm etc, then just spray it all around, working in with a brush if needed, then rinse off with a hose , comes up a treat
this stuff,get it from halfords who havea 3 for 3 offer on all cleaning products at the moment

I use something I picked up in a post on here somewhere. Half white spirit/paraffin, half fairy liquid. Shake it up and it turns into a green gel that'll degrease anything. Just smear it on with your fingertips, leave it a few mins and wipe clean.
