Afternoon all :D

I've got me hands on some side skirts and an 'is lip spoiler for ye olde e30.

The skirts were unfinished and I want them red, and the lip spoiler was ripped, now been plastic welded and filled.

I've brought them into work to paint them since its dry and I can nip off and give them a coat every so often rather than waste time sitting round at the weekend.

So far, I've filled, sanded and plastic primed it. Then I gave it a few coats of filler primer. I've just now sanded that back to get it level. I used wet & dry 'wet' going from 240, 600 and 800.

Now its level, parts of the plastic have come back through and some of it has the filler primer and plastic primer showing.

Obviously, since the plastic is showing, it'll need plastic priming again yes?

Once plastic primed, do I need to sand it again? if so will 800 be ok - again used wet?

Skirts
Again, I used plastic primer (grey), then red primer to make it easier for the red paint. I've done this straight with 800grit wet and some of the black plastic is showing through.

Plastic primer again?
Will I have to sand the primer prior to paint and will 800grit be ok?

My bright and airy prep space

...no I wont be putting the actual paint on down there

Cheers!

You need to give it a bit of plastic primer then some high fill primer over that....

Block it down with 600 then 800 and dont go through the primer.... a tiny little bit is ok.

Now clean with wax and grease remover (prespsol)

And paint leaving around 5 minutes between coats no longer....

1st coat is a grab coat so its quite light... Helps prevent runs
2nd coat is a nice medium coat
3rd coat another nice medium coat...

And that is it... unless your going to clear...

Hope your not using cheap garbage paint. Do it right do it once.. :D

No problems thats what im here for...

Make sure you use a block to sand and you must give the primed parts a guide coat, block it till there is no more guide coat and your done..

No probs will do. I used a guide coat when I sanded it earlier (having read about it this morning).

I was a little bit sceptical about using a guide coat (I've never really painted anything other than a kidney grill, some wing mirrors and a car all matt black with rattle cans so hardly experienced in 'proper painting')

Got to say though that it made things a lot clearer to see where I had sanded and where I'd missed bits. Its true what they say about the prep taking more time than the actual painting. I thought I'd have these finished and ready for the car by tomorrow but I doubt that now. Happy to wait though :D

yes post pics once done

personloy as its skirts and a lip and will get grit etc hit them, id leave them off the car at least a week at min just to let really go off and harden properly, putting the lip on a day after paint might get chipped that little bit easier, it will be dry, but not proper hardened and settled

im no expert, but id get some 1200 wet n dry paper to do the primer after the 800 ?

also thought it was like 15 mins between coats not 5 ? but again im a novice to this and only done some scuttle vents and then bumper trim, its nice to learn how to do this

i always leave primer 15-20 mins and the same for the first coat of paint, then i leave it about 40mins between coats.

erm...this might be a silly question, but how many tins of paint should I need to paint the above, i.e.
1 Front 'is lip spoiler
1 set of SE Skirts (comprising of 4 parts)
:?:

(600ml tins btw)

Tins???? Are you spaying with a gun and compressor or do you mean rattle cans.

If tins, a 500ml just to be on the safe side, gives some left over just in case, don't forget the thinners though.

2 Rattle cans should be fine, you want nice thin even coats.

hrmm I'm using rattle cans from Halfords dude (I know I know :bolt: )

However, I'm now onto my 5th and final can now (300ml not 600ml as I first thought). I just thought that seemed excessive.

I did have a re-jig of things last night though and managed to get a lot better coverage from a can than I had been previously so I think its just down to experience and bad technique that I'd been coating the floor instead of the parts

Oh dear...:hammer: The advice I gave you was based on doing it right hehehe with proper paint.. When you paint rattle can paint the only advice I can give is dont get runs Let it go tacky between coats so if you touch a unseen area its tacky and no paint comes off on your fingers...

rattle cans, warm then up in a bowl of hot (not boiling water) for about 10-15mins, then shake for about 5 mins. Will spray a nice thin coat, the heat thins the paint a little makes is easier to actually spray. also a trigger attatchment helps if you are not spraying metallic paint (Don't even think of using one with a metallic paint).

6 cans is very escessive i sprayed and lacquered and entire rear bumper on a Focus with only 2 cans of paint and 2 cans of lacquer, had about half a can of paint left over too.

Not just yet dude, all finished and painted up, not 100% immaculate but a man on a galloping horse would think it looked ok.

Was going to fit them then decided to replace the front wing now rather than later before I glued the skirts on, just waiting on delivery before I can get that fitted then lob this lot on :D
