Caked in mud, plus two stones caught in rim of the wheel arch stopping water from escaping, this has resulted in some rust. Time to start sanding!

2 stones?? They're not stones, thats half a wall!!

Poor design by BMW to be honest, they collect crap as soon as the car leaves the factory and are rarely cleaned.

Any bodywork experts here?
Though the rust hasn't eaten through, I'm guessing it will leave some pretty thin metal once ground back. Is this fixable without welding or will I have to take it to a body shop?

I really need to sort mine out they look great from the outside but the inside lip is starting to get some surface rust

No need to grind it out.

Get something like FERTAN or RUST REMOVER, these react with the iron oxide to create an iron tannate which is as strong as the existing metal surrounding the area.

Worked wonders on parts of the floor in my E30, and can be overpainted, sanded, whatever.
