paint work

Some of you might know that recently got my car respray, in some areas i have what i think its called orange peal in the paint now i`v been told to give it a good mopping over. today i went and got myself one of theses polishing machines with 5/6 heads

i`m very confident that i can do this with the right stuff, from what i`v read on here most people use G3 which i have used before but not on a freshly painted car.

my 1st question is would using a polishing machine sort my orange peal out.

2nd is, would G3 be ok to use or would it be to hard on my paint if so can you reccommend anything else to use.

It all depends on how much paint is on the car. Ask whoever painted it, how many coats have been put on.

If you can imagine the terrain of the paint, side on as if it was a slice through a mountain range, what you have to do is take away all the "peaks". So if theres little paint, it will be easy to polish thru the paint to the undercoat. If theres a fair bit of paint, a sand with 4000 wet n dry to a silky sheen, then a rub over with T-cut or similar will bring up a deep shine.

why not try your skills first on anorther car, or an old panel, its so easy to take paint down to undercoat with a mop.

early part of last year i had a red tourer that if you looked at it about 5ft away you would say its pink, so i had a go at it then work well but that was just old flat paint and i was very pleased with the out go come.

i will find out how many coats my car as had (3/4 think) but not sure.

if i sand it with 4000 wet&dry paper will that do the job better than mopping it.

Dame by the way i just throw a perfect boot lid away in brilliant red aswell

Use 4000 wet and dry, or finer if you can get it, but no less. Use a big bucket of clean soapy washing up liquid, wet the paper thoroughly by leaving it in the water for 10 min, then with only light pressure, rub over the orange eel area. Dry off with something like an Autoglym synthetic leather, and you will see the "peaks" being flattened out. Dont rush this!

Take it down a little, then use a bit of T-cut to polish, until you are happy with the finish. Take it slow, and stop at the point you are just happy with. Be very careful at any corners.

The gloss you can achieve will amaze you!

With this method, its quite slow, but also quite safe. A mop is a skilled job!

baz, mopping it wont do nothing! you will need to flat it off first to remove the orange peel. then mop it. being red it might not of been laquered, do you know if it was? either way it not really a diy job as is very easy to fook it right up!!! burning a edge off along the swage lines will ruin your day for sure. pop round mine and i take a look for you, i ve got a mop and g3, it depends how bad it is as to weather i try to sort out someone elses mess. considered taking it back to the body shop?

yeah good buddy of mine, he used to work in a car body repair shop, he only wants me to go round so he can show me is new toy up and running.


or if this dont work going to look for a tech2 kit and and get it resprayed again.

you know what tho....i really didnt want to go down the mtech2 kit route, i like the way mine look because its differant everyone elses.
