Gliptone THEN furnitureclinicstuff - will that work?

I'm going to refurb my cream leathers soon and was going to go all out with the furnitureclinic http://furnitureclinic.co.uk/Leather_Ca ... ration.htm

BUT after seeing how highly gliptone is recommended by other zoners I'm not sure anymore!

My seats are f****d. the rear seats and the headests are fine, but the driver's seat has holes, deep creases etc etc.

So I thought I'd apply gliptone cleaner and conditioner to get the leather really nice and soft, before repairing, cleaning, filling and re-colouring with the furniture clinic stuff.

Anyone done this before? I'm worried that the furniture clinic conditioner will make it harder for the paint to bond to even after alcohol cleaning.

their leather was dreadfully cracked scrached and dull, both had this done, it has filler and what not and it looks like the seat has been recoverd i will try and find the thread for you

you can see the filler if you use it on large rips and what not but its really good, even feels like leather too

it is i that has used furnitureclinic's products on two cars now! and would reccommend it - highly!

can't comment on the gliptone - never seen its results in the flesh.

the second set of seats i did for my mate were cracked quite badly and a £5 small 50g tub of filler did the job lovely (pics are on the thread i did on it as alex mentioned)

i will also offer you some bits if you do use the furniture clinic stuff - will save you lots of time and £££. i have the sprayer and a compressor that i can lend you - this will save you £5.99 per can of air propellant and is a lot lot easier to work with. due to its constant and predictable psi output.

this should price the kit at about 60-70 quid i reckon! you'd have to ask them though obviously.

post some pics of how the seats look at the moment. i have a shed load more pics of when i did mine too i can post if you like??

My concern has arisen after reading on gliptone's website that the paint systems like furnitureclinic won't allow the leather to be soft again, so I was thinking to use gliptone conditioner to soften the leather up really well before painting it. I thought the leather cleaner and prep would still leave the surface 'keyed' for the paint. Does the softening cream that you used actually soften it well?

I'll get some pics of my seats this weekend, but they're in a similar state as yours, even worse actually! There's a nice hole in the driver's bolster that needs a repair, plan to do via a kit from furniture clinic for about £15.

I'm going to strip the seats out and do a proper job, likely to strip and clean the carpets etc at the same time, with a pressure washer and lots of soap

A few more questions in my head:

1. Is overspray easy to clean eg on the seat adjustment handles etc? Or do you have to mask everything up?

2. Are these handles removeable? One has some bad corrosion, I wanted to remove, clean and respray this in black.

3. Is it easy to service the seat mechanisms on the sports seats? I've noticed that there's quite a bit of play in the hinge, or is this normal? I.e. the backrests can move a little (a lot!)

4. Good advice about the compressor - thanks! I have a "proper" garage thing (SIP?) - do you know what fitting I need for the applicator gun?

5. Can't decide on matt vs satin finish! Goldysingh mentioned matt on the cab, you used satin...yours look nice, but maybe matt is the way forward....arrgh! Decisions decisions...

I did mine a couple of years ago with the furniture one....

the over spray is easy to clean...thinners

in all honesty i think its to early to tell wether the cream is softening it anymore, it does have the same characteristics of the leather before it was sprayed though. i'm happy.

it flexs and creases as it should and is same comfort level when driving it! me and my mate did 400 mile round trip to DC09 car show in it only a few days after i finished it, which was a bit risky according to furniture clinics instructions. but still fine.

like everyone else has said the overspray is very easy to get off, i didn't mask anything on the first seat i did which was daft!
not cos its hard to get off - its just quicker to mask than remove paint - its a ball ache

i used airbrush cleaner fluid to remove overspray - but i guess the ingredients in that are similar if not the same as thinners. just don't get it the seats !!

can't help you with the mechanisms of the seats ..sorry i'm clueless when it comes to that, mine stayed as they were. 4 bolts got them out and four bolts put them back in ! lol.

as for the compressor - don't now what SIP is...? sorry. i used the missus's twin cylinder air compressor that she used once upon a time for nail art and fake tanning! butchered the hose they gave me from furnitureclinic and it works a treat.
would post a pic of how i did this but i'm not at home sorry.

like i said - you or anyone else is welcome to borrow it, it is really essential cos the ONLY crappy thing they give you in the set is the propellant cans, with usual rattle can problems, can freezing up, keeping it warm, spraying with it in warm water etc. etc. - too much hassle. the compressor has a foot pedal to control power then finger control on the airbrush itself is used.
when ordereing if you ask for no airbrush and no cans it should knock a lot off the price .

the airbrush and propellant can -



1/8 BSP male outlet - is the output on the compressor - this then needs to go to the airbrush bit - which is tiny (not sure of size) but like i said i have made a cable that fits it and goes to the compressor and its proper job too... in case that it sounds like i made a dodgy one with gaffer tape..

the finish - i'd put money on nobody would tell the difference between matt and satin. what you get in the pack is a super seal gloss!! (nasty sounding) that you seal over with one coat - followed by the matt/satin seal which is like 5 coats and covers the gloss.

i didn't ask for satin - they never gave me choice, but the car was there and they saw it and colour matched it so i'm presuming they knew eactly what it needed. they are pretty switched on guys there who look like they know what there doing.

when you fix the hole with filler you have to layer it up - a bit at the bottom - then dry it - then another bit - dry it etc. (hairdryer is essential) otherwise the stuff at the bottom doesn't dry well. the filler is really good stuff though, and when finished you couldn't point at any part of the seat and say "thats been filled" it just blends in and colours up exactly the same.

Your interior looks awesome - I'll be over the moon if my car comes out like that - looks unbelievably similar with regard to colour and interior...I'll make sure I take lots of pics when I do the job in a couple of weeks...watch this space all!

DaveD - great link for the repair advice. Gotta make sure I do the job during the week - I bet I'll be making regular trips to the stealer to replace lots of rusted clips and screws! I had b etter dust off the welder too - referring to the machine, not my dad
