I'm in the process of fettling a pair of door mirrors.
They have the usual "corroded base" problem and I've sanded them back to bare metal with the intention of etch-priming the bases before top-coating them in satin black.
Will the etch-primer do any harm to the plastic parts, or should I mask them off? Obviously, I'll need to do the casings in plastic primer.
What a ballache it is not being to seperate the housing from the base. 
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

I suggest painting it in two parts. First mark of the hinged part and paint the main area that holds the glass. Then mask of the main part and paint the hinge part. That's what I did anyhooo

I need to do the plastic part of my wing mirrors on my car! What primer do you use? Then satin black? Do you laquer them?

You need plastic primer for the housings.
What I'm probably going to do with mine is do them satin black all over and then lacquer just the housings. I reckon I can get away with it as my car is diamond black.
If it should look gash, I'll still have the original body-colour mirrors and I'll just take them to the bodyshop and get them re-done in body colour.This is why I no longer drive an E30......
