Rust

noticed a spot of rust on the back of my car today. whats the best way of going about sorting this?

this one looks just like surface cust that i could grind back and re paint it?



and this one the hole on the right side i can fit fit my fingers up until i reach some more body work? bottom of the boot perhaps?
this would need grinding out and a palte welding over?

and the left side looks to be where its started to rust adn spread up to what you can see on the 1st picture.



im happy to have a fiddle with spanners but body work scares the shit out of me

i need a new one of those panels, i'm hoping its a bolt on/off job like the front one

I have the same problem on my 318IS, apparently the apron is welded on.

I thought exactly what you thought with the same looking problem on my car (1st pic). What I didn't realise was that there is seam sealer on one side and stone chip on the other, turns out that rather than metal much of what was between was rust, reaching a lot further than it at first seemed. Only thing you can do is get your poking stick out and start investigating.

I had this bit of rot worm on my 88 318, i ended up replacing the rear panel, rear quarters, inner and outer. The job just got worse and worse, in the end i gave it to a zoner to cannabalise for suspension.

basically all facelift e30's rust in this place its a design flaw. a replacement panel can be bout for about 60 quid.
the reason is that the chasisi rail ends ther and ther is no protection only seam sealer to the elements

Took a mate and myself an afternoon of welding to sort it out on mine, although I still haven't got round to welding the section of rear valance back in.

Oooo, that's not good. Significantly worse than what I found .

Wasn't great to start with but got better as i went on got lots of practice out of that mess
