Hey people,

any one know what polish is best to use for my e30 has faded for obvious reasons and is starting to appear white on a red colour 8O . Any one know what products i should be using to restore the colour without spraying the colour and how effective it will be.

Much appriecatied

first off you need to mop ? machine polish it with a compound such as farecla g3 as it sounds really faded. with some time it should bring the colour back

Mine was pretty bad when I got it in January, careful machine polishing really bought it back though.

That was using a Menzerna polish with a rotary machine. Afterwards it was treated with a sealant containing UV inhibitors and this has been topped up and maintained fairly regularly to help minimize the fading again. Trouble is, once they get really badm they will return to that state faster and faster.

mine was pretty "pink" when I got mine back in feb

I gave it a covering of t-cut

and began polishing like my life depended on it

That was using normal off the shelf t-cut, you've got to wax it with decent stuff afterwards to keep the shine but its still red now and that was back in feb i think

I used 'Autoglym Paint Renovator' to achieve the same results, believe it or not.

It is all these cheap cutting compounds seem to be useful for, mind. No good on anything with clear coat.

Another vote for T-cut - my brilliant red 318is was also fading badly to white when I picked it up. A bottle of T-cut and a lot of elbow grease later, and it's now quite shiny.

All in all, I think this is a Good Thing... The previous owner sold it cheap because she thought it needed a complete respray. And to be fair, to get it up to the same standard as most of the cars I see here, it does. But if it means we can get cheap E30s in return for a few hours toil with a rag and bottle of t-cut, I'm more than happy.

Old red cars are a pain in the arse, apparently the colour red years ago had to be made with high lead content which made them prone to oxidisation. I used to own a mk2 mr2 wich was red and to sell it i had to polish it 6 times just to make it look half decent :!: So what did i do next :?: i bought a red e30 which has the same problem.

Ive bought loads of polishes to rid the car of this problem from autoglym , turtle , zaino ( £45!! ). Ive even sent products back to companys to complain that it doesnt do what it says on the tin !!

The only conclusion that i have come to is to use T cut on red and then use a good polish , ive just used turtle wax safe cut and then used a zaino polish. If im honest im not impressed with the zaino on red, after £45 worth of swirl remover and polish i got better results with a good T cut and auto glym super resin polish. Its just a pain getting rid of the white marks

Zaino needs a near perfect finish to be worth applying and in my opinion that means a machine finish (in the first instance).

T cut isnt a bad solution by hand if its badly oxidised, just top it off with a decent quality wax or sealant to try and keep it red... (might need doing again after 6 months)

if you were to see my dads motor which is zinobar. i spent a day detailing the paint work using a porter cable and full zaino products and the paint hasnt faded yet and this was nearly 2 months ago and it is kept outside,

t-cut is an awfull product, may well do the job but it does no good to your paint.

Just to explain why T-cut is considered bad, its because the abrasives don't break down - it just keeps scrubbing and scrubbing. It removes a lot of material quickly, but that isn't often a good thing. Same thing with AG Paint Renovator. Its savage!

I wouldn't say that T-cut was that bad - there's certainly other stuff out there that does a better job in the right hands, but the fact is I can pick up a bottle of T-cut from my local corner shop for a fiver, and it's enough to do the whole car to a standard I'm happy with.

That said, what I know about car detailing could be written on the inside of the ear of a small mouse, and despite me being pleased with my shiny new car in my own little world, as mentioned earlier it's pretty scrappy compared to most of the cars here. I guess it's a game of diminishing returns - you can keep going in search of the ultimate finish [1], or just find a point at which you can't personally justify any more time/money to get a better looking car.

[1] And total respect to all you chaps that do. I wish I had the skill and dedication to produce that kind of work.

Thats why I went with t-cut, car was faded badly but only cost me a beer money. Bottle of t-cut later and it looked like it had tripled in value

If I had the time/space/money to spend on detailling gear I would, but in my opinion, money goes on sorting bodywork and then engine. Paint (although could be classed as body) could always be bodged Munky style

t-cut then autoglm super resin polish gets my vote too. but dont just coat the car in it like that guy with the pics up there.
do one panel at a time. and not in the sun shine do it one evening in the shade. otherwise itll bake on and your arms will fall out of their sockets as you try in vain to polish it off.
and dont buy some fancy halfrauds polishing cloths. an old proper cotton bed sheet is the way to go.

just get a mate with a porter cable and decent compounds/sealant and waxes and as long as the laqcuer hasn't peeled you should be able to take off a few microns of paint and get an amazing finish back.

If T cut if your preferred method, then follow this with Autoglym Super Resin Polish and a layer or 2 of Autoglym Extra Gloss Protection, that should keep it from fading too soon.

ive owned a few red cars.... all you need to do is buff the car with g10 cutting compound, use a decent polish and then use superguard paint sealant on it...
