want to paint my engine up to tidy it up ,manifold was easy with the high temp black but unlike my 325i i had 2 yr ago when i tried painting the rocker cover or is it the air plenum on top silver 6 branch part the paint isnt taking to it like it has a coating of some sort on it but it looks tired and in a off goldy yellow colour is there any way of removing this coating ??? any help would be nice thanks ................

i used a copper wire brush on mine... came up silver again

Like any painting exercise, it's all in the preparation. Make sure the surface is free of any grease, oil, wax, etc using a wire brush (as bobbin1982 mentions) and clean all surfaces carefully with appropriate thinners / painting prep fluid

new parts on order sand blasted should be cleaner lookin ....................

It's wax that was used to seal the engine in the factory. Oddly enough, buyers of ultra-low miles E34s and the like like to see a bit of yellow gunk in there...
