My car is covered in similar sgraffito. Most are on removable panels which I aim to replace over time. This one is on the roof however and parts of it go quite deep.

Any suggestions for removal. Will I need to fill it in first, somehow?

I just bought a chip cover up kit from paints4u.com - there are a few different ones on there, maybe they have one that will do the trick.

I have a similar depth scratch that I am dealing with by building up layers of paint - maybe not the most common way, but it's what I am doing.

Touch up kits come with G3 compound to belnd the paint in.

LOL !!! but ffs whoever on earth done that do an e30 :twisted:

looks quite nasty no scratch remover wil sort that youl need to cure it then primer then paint in the scratch, then try and blend it out but... youl want an expert opinion on this but that looks like its more carved to the metal than just the paint, and that whole area would need to be sanded right down with a machine and any rust removed, and properly re painted, if its not done properly and fixed over its possible it will start to rust the roof out slowly from inside out

maybe kurust/fertan it, then paint it over, could be an option i dont know, if its a long term car for you then sort it properly and have the whole roof re painted

Your going to have fun with that, like i am with mine, the scratch goes through to the primer which is a real pain to fill in, best to fill it with paint so its sitting just proud of the surface then use rubbing compound to get it level and matched with the rest of the painwork. Farcela G3 is used by most people but you have to be carefull with it, its very abrasive.

I have some scratches on my car that go down to metal, i am doing mine a slightly different way to above but the results should be the same, i am just making life more difficult for myself and it will take a bit longer. My way means using lots of tape, primer filler and an airbrush, using an airbrush i can build up lots of very thin coats of paint so i can match the paint thickness of the scratches and grazes on the bodywork. This is so when the rotary polisher comes out, i have uniform paint thickness so i don't have thin paint to worry about.

What's primer filler? I was thinking of using something to just skim/fill the scratches and then maybe a few layers of primer followed by a few layers of brilliant red. Bit of sanding inbetween and buffed up at the end. Baddabing!

I mean it wont look factory finish but at least I wont have a cock on my car anymore (just one in it . :D ).

personally i would, use a detailing pen to remove most rust, then rust cure gel

then fill in scratches with paints for U kit, let the paint set for an hour at least as its deep so will take longer

then i would use 2000 grit 3g wet and dry paper, keep it wet only a single layer and flat an flat it back until level

Then polish it back up to a shine

Will still be noticeable sometimes but can get good results with practice.

Then wax

Filler primer is like a think primer that's usually yellow in colour and good to fill in unevenness in bits, usually handy for DIY wheel refurbs.. I think it would be worth rubbing it down in the deeper areas and layer it up with the primer and keep rubbing it down until it's even.
Once it's even spray over with the grey/white primer and then paint and lacquer accordingly... rattle can spraying is easier then it looks 8)

Well primer filler depends on what you're looking at. high build primer is designed to try and bury pinholes in filler and the 120 grit scratches the rough-arse panel beater served up! so if you blocked the nob out of your roof with 180 grit paper and achieved taking it back to the metal then shoot over with 400 to smooth out the contours of the paint. Apply the high build over that. block it with 800 wet or dry paper (wet) and scotch the area your painting, in this case its the roof...and paint.

There is a thing called bar coat too. Its like primer and its like filler. it does both. but its mega thick stuff! I've never used it but its ideal to be used on cars that are rippled down the side to perfect a straight finish. If you want pointers i can post pics of a bonnet repair up that i did. Theres no complete photo because i didnt need to show the owner a pic of it lacquered due to the fact it was on his car lol! I can get pictures of what i do up though and talk you through it stage by stage if you want???
