Hello Fellow Addicts

In addition to all the other things i'm doing to my new wife, it really needs a new lick of paint. The lacquer's peeling in places (hood, rear quarter, sunroof etc) and it could do with a new petty coat. ;) I love her to bits but i don't have £1000 + to spend on a respray. Please Help.

P.S.

Thoughts on Matte?

To get a good finish it needs to be done with a gun. And preferably somewhere dry and warm.

If it's rattle can then Matt is the only way to go.

Can anyone describe the process to go matte from an old gloss finish that needs work? I was thinking a mid night blue MATTE.

Get a decent mask. I painted my VW bright yellow a few years back and wore a cheap crappy mask. I was sneezing up chrome yellow nose oysters for a week. Watch out for overspray also. My socket set also ended up yellow and a mate who dropped in to see how it was going went home with a chrome yellow beard.
Years ago someone called Cannons I think used to sell a quick car paint set up for cars that used Berger brushes. We are talking long time ago though. I saw a few VW painted with it. They looked OK ish.

it all depends on what finish your after. Does the whole car need painting or would you get away with getting the worst affected panels painted and getting the rest of the car machine polished. in my opinion if your attempting a diy job i would get some practice on some old panels and read up into the techniques before starting it. But in all honesty its best left to a professional.

Sadly the days of DIY paint jobs are limited, cellulose is the ideal stuff for home use, you can use that and get away with just a fume mask, it's quite forgiving in that it's easy to polish back a bad gun finish but it doesn't retain It's gloss to well and it chips easily, two packs are a total no go. There is also coach enamel, this stuff is oil based and again doesn't hold on to It's gloss to well. If you do find a way even if you do go for a hideous Matt finish you could do worse than an Apollo spray mate.

If it's matte you're after, why not simply remove the existing clear lacquer coat using Scotch pads or similar and voila!

My dad painted a whole 1963 vw beetle with a brush using enamel. It came out matte. This was 1991 and the rat look had not come around yet and it looked a bit dodgy. Fortunately/unfortunately one day on the way to work it caught fire(as vw do). He got out just in time to see it explode. He managed to save his sandwiches.

Find a college that trains bodywork to students, the teacher would show the student how to do it on your vehicle.

if you like the idea of matt black, it's a doddle. it'll look ratty whatever you do but cool at the same time :)

A while back me and my brother did this to a rover 214 before taking it to the nurburgring :) :)

take one nasty 2 tone rover 214:
Image

'remove loose/flaking paint' it says on the tin...!
Image

then rub back with scotch pads, mask up some bits (well, we didn't actually!) and throw 3 trade size cans of rattle can matt black over it outside on the drive

as mean as a rover 214 can ever be!

Didn't know it was track! Now I am jealous :(

Still, don't spray a nice E30 matt black with rattle cans. Just save up and get it done properly. IMO of course.

How about getting it wrapped instead?

wrapping an e30 is not easy as the roof joins the quarter panles. you'll have joins

its also expensive to do

save the money and get it painted properly
