I have removed my pressed german plates from my E30 a couple of months ago as there was a sudden interest from the 5-0 about them. Thought it was easier to put some nice std plates on and save the grief!

Well that theory lasted all of 2 months when I suddenly had a brainwave. Carbon plates (not only cool but saves a few grammes )

I did not want the cheap carbon effect tat that some places sell, it looks nothing like the real stuff and just looks poop in my opinion. So I contacted a local company who make carbon parts for all manner of cars, mainly Lotusesesesesseses (What is the plural of Lotus? Lotai?)

http://www.reverie.ltd.uk/

Reverie are also suppliers to some F1 teams and also some superbike teams, I knew my request was well within their ability :P

Collected the blanks last night, they were a lot more expensive than my mate got charged but his were made from offcuts and bits with slight weave defects. Mine are absolutely perfect, not a fibre out of place. Also mine have the weave orientation in the same direction, sad I know but it would annoy me otherwise.

Gave them a light polish with some meguiars #81 hand polish just to enhance the gloss, then a coat of wax to keep them looking spot on.

Look, sunshine! I love the look of carbon, just a shame that 85% is going to be covered

Image

I will be cutting the vinyl to lay over the top as a negative, so the letters will show through as carbon. The vinyl will be reflective so there should be no issues with legality in theory.

All the bits you see in the following picture that are black will be cut from the vinyl so the carbon shows through.

Image

The letters are 72mm high (10% reduction on the legal requirement) as this just tidies up the plate imo. Had this size on my last car for 4 years without any issues, I also do all of my mates plates with the same size characters. None have had any problems.

Hopefully they will look quite nice when done, If not I'll remove the vinyl and make some www.E30zone.net show plates :D

I knew these would be another marmite modification, but if we all had the same tastes it would be a boring world :D

It would have probably been loads cheaper to lay up my own carbon, but it probably wouldn't have looked as good.

Well they are pretty much finished, just need to make the small BSAU number that goes in the bottom left corner, so at a glance they will look pretty much legal.

Shame there wasn't any sun today to bring out the weave a little better.

I can't see why they wouldn't be considered legal TBH, and at any distance other than knelt next to them I can't see how anyone could tell.

I think they look smart, next time I have CF sheet left over I might give that a crack.

Did something similar years back for me and a few friends, but had a black / grey marble effect instead. Unfortunately, the fella that used to supply me with the blank plate colours and plastics had to stop due to new laws :(

Not a bad effect :)

Nice, I like those, fair play for doing something a little different.

Have you thought about sending a few 'theoretically' questions to DVLA too see if you can be 100% sure they are legal?

I know you are 10% small on the font but seriously, how would plod know on the road side? It's not like they carry a measuing tape for checking lettering....(at least that I know of!!)

Well these are now sat in the garage, I didn't like the way they looked on the car.

Not to worry tho, I'll whip the vinyl off and make some show plates ready for Pod next weekend. :D
