hi all, yesterday my friend installed my stereo back into my car (clarion 53w per channel??) and i would like to upgrade my speakers in the front and rear, i dont want 6x9's. i was thinking about infinity's?? what sizes would i be able to fit in without hacking my parcel shelf about? the speakers in the front will also be done at the same time.

I had 13cm standard fronts and cut a hole in the rear parcel shelf and used a spacer to fit 17cm.

For cheap and cheerful I'll always recomend the Focal lower end stuff..

For higher end I'd reccomend getting some ScanSpeak 4 ohm stuff (intended for home hifi - high end) and enclosing them with either active crossovers or some of the KEF crossovers (KX-2 or 3's, I can't remember).

Personal preference.. I used to like infinity stuff but I often find car stuff is all bells and whistles and no real performance.

HTH.

Jai,

Do you know if Tymphany make any coaxial speakers? I need some new rears but want to keep it simple. Otherwise i'll probably settle for some infinity references

Cheers,

I've not seen any Typhany co-ax's, only seen their subs on t'inernet.

I never really liked the reference infinity's. They could just as much be any other generic car speaker. The Kappas always sounded a lot better to me but I do like quite bright sounding speakers. The references seemed to have weak midrange and splashy treble.

Just my oppinion though..

Yeah I have some Kappa 6x9s but like I don't want to butcher them in to my e30.
You seem pretty clued up, I know they're not the best for quality and range but what decent coaxials would you recommend?

Cheers

Hmmm.. JL audio, Focal, Morel, CDT and Rainbow seem to be making nice speakers. Though they can be quite expensive. I think they all do a budget line. I hate to buy by brand though so go to a decent car hifi shop and scope them out.. Have a listen then go get some cheap off the internet (sorry traders everywhere, but thats life)

I do like the Infinity Kappas for bang per buck, and used to really like the MB Quarts though now my tastes are more toward the silk dome tweeter, rather than the bright metal doems of the quarts. I spose you're looking for something quality, with a nice smoothe sound rather than a load of shiny bits and bells and whistles.. Always try and get something with a decent external crossover. Just a single cap isn't going to do much for the SQ, even in coaxail configuration. I did actually quite like a friends alpine type R's that he got a while ago. They were flawed but hell of a lot of speaker for bugger all money on ebay. Even the 5.25's produced a lot of bass and could take quite a bit of a hammering. They have monster magnets on them and quite a long throw.

I'm a bit out of the loop with car hifi these days, but was always more into SQ than 'SPL'...

DLS will always give a fairly nice sound, their tweeters are really nice for the money and although loads of detail they never sound shrill or harsh even when cranking the volume up a little.
