VERY basically:

1. sand down the original item with initially 200-300 paper or even some wire wool, try to remove as much paint as possible or at least the clear coat if there is any on there.
2. fill any scratches and holes with filler and leave to dry, flatten the filled area as much as possible with 800 paper
3. clean and degrease the thing
4. give it one or two coats with grey primer (ideally you need paint with a plasticiser which allow it to flex and not crack - otherwise paint suitable for plastic). and allow to dry
5. let some 800 grade paper soak in water for 10 mins
6. rub it down again till its smooth - now go over the cracks and holes still visible with more filler, allow to dry and flatten again with 800.
7. clean and degrease
8. give it two or three good coats of primer - note one coat does not mean one application - better to do many light applications for your first time, i.e. a quick spray and leave for ten mins folowed by another till you judge you have covered the whole thing, that is what i call one coat. repeat to get 2nd coat. allow to dry for min 1 hour
9. with wet 800 flatten the primer coat (you can also judge here if two coats is enough - when flatteneing you do not need to apply too much pressure to the sand paper - your aim is only to remove the high spots and lumps in the particles of paint.
10. clean and degrease
11. apply the colour coat in same manner - three should be enough allowing an hour in between coats allow it to fully dry at least an hour or better overnight
12. then lightly flatten with wet 1000 paper - clean and degreease
13. two or three coats of clear lacqure
14. alllow to dry for ideally a day or longer
15. flatten with wet 1000 grade paper
16. finish with soft cloth and polishing compound (about 1000 or 2000 grit) - you wull need several applications
17. several applications of polish - then finally buff it up with soft cloth
18. thats about it

I realise this may not be the best way for those who have done it before but for a first effort i would do something like this (many years ago i did the entire rear of my 318 like this and it lasted 2 years till the rust came back, and about 7 months ago i repsrayed my dads E39) - but main thing with paint is take your time - too much at one go by a novice will result in runs etc

and finally dont expect to get it right first time, and most cock ups even at the later stages can be flattened out and hid anyway.

i would budget for one can primer, one can colour, one can lacqure for something like a tech 2 lower valance - thus about 5 of each will do the whole kit

good luck

I wouldn't rub the lacquer down with 1000 grit 8O I use 1500 or 2000 depending on the finish from the gun.Another tip is to use some black aerosol lightly dusted over your primer before you rub it down that way, as you flat it you will see the low spots as the black will rub off the high bits, leaving traces in the low areas.(this only wants to be a light dusting). Just my 2p's worth as a pro!
Also if the kit is in good nick,i.e no damage, and you are just changing the colour dont bother with loads of flatting and priming.Just give the surface a good key with some grey scotchbrite and some surface prep fluid, until it is very dull and lightly scratched in appearance(ask for g-matt or similar in the paint shop) and get the colour on!
p.s You will need lacquer on aerosol black.

Why will you need lacquer on flat black schuey?

Also you will need more than 5 cans to do a complete Mtech II kit, i don't know what size cans mrLEE30 has out in Bahrain...

If you were spraying through a gun you would need about a litre with black,I dont know how much you would use with cans though,as I only use aerosol's for primer. (you could buy a small compressor/cheap spray gun and the paint you need for under a ton winkeye )

I was thinking of buying a cheap paint compressor but was worried that the finish might be affected

is this suitable?

with regards to having your own set up at home what is the smallest compressor that you could get yet still good enough to do a panel well? .....There are a few guns on ebay for under £30.00....

You really dont want to be any smaller than a 25ltr compressor on a panel, they work fine the only downside to them being small is that they are on more often, and they are not the quietest things  I used to have one in my van for my job(mobile smart repairs) but now have a bigger van and bigger compressor.Still use the small one in the garage though.
With regards to guns,I have some expensive ones at home, but the company I now work for provided me with two U-Pol guns which I have seen at my local paint shop for £27+vat and I use them all day every day with no trouble at all. The finish is down to technique but you dont need to be an apprentice trained bentley painter to get a decent finsh, you will either pick it up quickly or you won't. An expensive gun wont make a sh1t painter any better :D
Its all in the wrist
Also you dont need a huge gun unless you are doing full cars etc,if you want to spend a bit more you can get a Metabo gun for £80 thats fairly big from screwfix of all places,I know a lot of painters that swear by them

normal sized ones, if you cannot paint a tech 2 valance with one can of primer, one can of colour and one can of lacqure then you are probably doing something wrong!!!

you will also note i said ABOUT one can of each for SOMETHING like a tech 2 lower valance

thus i was budgeting so he does not go out and buy 50 cans of primer.... and finally i did mention that this is a rough guide for a novice - i did not expect it to be exact - nor am i a professional sprayer

hope that clears up the need for pedantic comments
