Build your own, its a piece of cake, and will look better than an off the shelf jobbie. Need a step by step?

hi, i have built a few in the past but you have to be fairly accurate on size. i had to cut down the box that was in my 4-door to be able to squeeze it into my cab. but fu*ked it up!! the box is strong and well seal'd but its too small now, and sounds nothing like it did!! but like i said im not letting go of my JL 12's to settle for 10's! if you have a step by step it would be handy as long as it will have the right capasity.

That box doesn't give figures for the internal capacity so how can you know if it's the right cubic capacity for your subs?
Also, i thought JL's were best in ported boxes?
Contact 'chu346' he's had some experience of building sub boxes, and should be able to help you build one to the spec you need for your car.

any boot space left? i was thinkin of building a box which is flat, from the back seat to the rear lights, and from shock base to shockbase but just able to drag it out if i need to get to spare wheel! think its about my only option!

this is a 12incher
, but you get the idea of what shape works. I designed it to use the dead space under the roof enclosure. with this set up i have 3cu.ft internal and the port (13x4 inch) fires to the side of the box you cannot see in the pic. with this set up i can quite easily get to the spare wheel (ok i must remove the box but my power/connection leads are long enough) and i have enough space in the boot to fit my wakeboard in there, or golf clubs if thats your fancy.
and final tip for a cab.... there is a very handy 30amp fused live supply just behind your rear seat... its for the rear heater/demister.... i junked mine and now can turn my sub on and off from the dash rear demister switch...handy for dodgy areas....

You need to know what model the JL's are.
Then you can look them up on the JL site and find the ideal box sizes (and capacities) for sealed or ported installs.
Wether to go ported or sealed depends on what you want (spl or quality??) and you could also adjust box sizes slightly to achieve a diffference either way!!
You can also add wadding if you end up having to make a smaller box than is ideal and this can effectively fool the sub into thinking it's in a bigger box (sort of!).
If you didn't like the sound of them in a ported box, i would guess it was either a rubbish box, or you're going for big spl, not quality!!
I've got a 13W7, currently in a slightly crap sealed box i knocked up - SPL is pretty naughty, but i don't like the lack of sound quality!!! Can't wait to get it set up in a proper custom ported box!!!!!!
Just out of interest, what amp(s) you running with them?? I'm using the JL 1000/1!!!!!!!

Go ported or have multiple subs. Four 12's would do the job, but are you man enough?cypriot_boy_2k7 wrote:spl or quality, i want crisp drop bass that you can hear and shake houses what do you recommend??????/
maddogbarker you need to make a box like mrlee where the back of the box goes under the roof compartment if you need boot space. If you can do without the boot space you would be best making one large box 15"x15"x38" with the 12's in the front and a port(s) on each end. The box should be sectioned so the subs have half the box each. I tried this in my cab and it was good, but soon upgraded to the 15" 'RE SX 15' which was great.
Let us know what model subs you have and I can design a box for you.
