I don't whether anybody on the zone will remember, but Pioneer made this headunit back in the early 90's which had orange buttons and display.

I am looking for a similar headunit, but can't seem to find one. Can anybody point me in the right direction :D

Features and functions aren't really that important as I will not be changing the speakers and so forth, as long as it is a CD player, it'll be fine MP3 would be a bonus!

Thanks in advance

I've got a Pioneer head unit that lights up orange or green but it plays cassettes so I've got the 6 disc changer with it too ...... oh and a remote control that attaches to the steering wheel. Bought it off a mate at work for £85. I don't know the name of it though, I'll have a look tonight and let you know

BMW Business CD radio
can find them on ebay (rarely a new one). i got mine for about £120 brand new, its a perfect match both on the finish of the unit and the nice orange glow, plus its got BMW stamped on it if that matters to you (Blaupunkt part though)

My Panasonic units orange is bang on. Does MP3's has an AUXin for Ipod, has not let me down at all.

Here it is displaying red, but the orange is a real good match.

I like the look of this one. Very cheap though and no RCA outputs unfortunately.

Looks good that amble... they do lots of other models too with usb etc... wonder what sound quality is like... I had not heard of that make before

I am most tempted by this one for price and design and usb capabilities http://www.justkenwood.co.uk/stock01/kdcw7537u.asp

Nakamichi RD-701 with a MF-51 CD Changer (Even the changer has amber illumination)

Above pictures for reference, the CD 700 below has identical illumination.

That Nakamichi is handsome! It suits the styling of the E30 better than the Alpine, although it's illumination colour doesn't look like such a perfect match.

Why don't they make more like that Nakamichi! Separate bass and treble knobs, clear white lettering and understated looks are all great features. What I don't like about the Alpine is lights up and flashes like a f'ing spaceship.

Moz, you are still using tapes  ? What's your excuse  ?

Im old, thats my excuse. I still record some of my old stuff on Metal cassettes. Theres a Nak changer in the boot though, 5 Discs. Will post the entire simple install pics. I guess people like the flashing and dancing headunits nowadays. Old school kool all the way.

I thought that's what you'd say. I'm old too, hence my reservations about my stereo's styling. I was looking for something like the Nakamatchi unitl I got diverted by the iPod thing I got for Xmas.

Im too old for iPods (i just dislike apple really) but I prefer to match the interior. I could not afford the CD-700 as it usually sells for a round £1000. They are top quality units, no internal amps, have to be amped and even an AUX in for iPod etc. The Kenwood you mentioned earlier, I had one of those, very nice models and more Slopes and EQ Curves than an active crossover. But it died after a year, laser assembly failure, I didnt bother repairing it as it was connected to my MP3 CD Changer. A few Kenwoods I have had have died unfortunately. Nak break too and are stupidly expensive to repair.

The alpine orange is a better match than Naks, more orange and less yellow.

I had a Nak CD500 in my car recently and the display is yellow rather than amber, BMW is around 630nm and closer to red than yellow.

Image

That Nak didn't look right at all, in fact I thought it really clashed and the red/blue display looked better.

Image

Haven't got a pic of the amber/amber combo, but this shows ho yellow it is...

Image

The red is actually a closer match.

The BMW branded version of the Becker is obviously a perfect match, plus it is a great sat nav system too....

Image

Image

But I wanted to go for all out sound quality and bought an Alpine 9887 in the end, pretty good match with the red buttons and amber quad keys, just the stupid biolite display in white ruined the look, but I put some amber acetate sheet behind the glass and in front of the lcd and it matched a treat....

Image

The new Pioneer 500UB is meant to be a dark amber, almost red so I would think that will match nicely....

Image

You can change the lcd display to amber too, for £100 I think this will go in my E30.

A lot of 80's and 90's pioneers had orange illumination. A lot were "dual" which meant you could switch between the two.

If you go for a period pioneer, make sure it's a "P" series. I've got the KEH-P3730R in mine and I think it looks very period AND, being a "P" series, it takes the converter to iPod enable it. This gives you the fly lead in the glove box to connect your iPod and enables you to control it from the head unit.

Heres the spec
http://www.service.pioneer-eur.com/pees ... P3730R.pdf

And heres what it looks like. I still want to change the Alpine spectrum analyser buttons to amber but here goes

Went and had a look at the new Pioneer 5000UB today, the dark amber is a spot on match, seems like an excellent unit for just over a ton.

Think the Blaupunkt BMW business CD player from the E36 is the best option - it's what I've got in mine. No photos of it installed, but this is an identical one on German Ebay:

gIzzE, is that in an E36? If not, how'd you get the climate control stuff into an E30?

Can't really add much about head-unit illumination myself :o:
