Hi all,
My new E30 had a chav CD JVC so I thought id transplant the Nakamichi cassette from my aging tech 1. The JVC was wired into a collection of artistic wiring butchery consisting of an ISO and some terminal connecting blocks.
I removed the butchery and proceeded to wire the stereo up to the same wires as the tech 1 (where it had been previously working flawlessly).
Everytime I power on, nothing. So I reset Nak via button and screen shows up, resets and dies again. So to check the illumination was working I switched the headlights on and voila it turns on the nak.
But this also blows fuse 21.
Any ideas.

Sounds like different colour coding between your new e30 and your old one. Almost every head unit has a connection for illuminations to be dimmed with headlight operation, im thinking that maybe where this was correct in your old car it is a different colour scheme in the new one. If this is the case (good old multimeter to check) what i think is happening is your headlight to headunit illumination connection is now trying to power the whole headunit up, this would easily cause the fuse to blow on your system leading to problems the your having. Hope this helps and is understadable lol
it is only a theory and could be totally wrong, but i think it makes sense

Yes seems so that the headlights are powering up the whole stereo.
Will break out the multimeter to check.
Thanks
