Hi Guys I am new to the forum I am from South Africa, and i have a 2 Door 316 1988/87.
My question is how do you tell if a chrome bumper can take the plastic bumper without modification.
I have read a couple of webpages where they state that after a certain year plastic bumpers will fit a chrome bumper.
If this questioned has been answered somewhere else just point me in the right direction

If your car is chrome bumper then it is pre facelift ( unless its different in SA) Fitting mtech2 bumpers will be difficult. Lots of modifying. Especially the back end.

The E30's we got in SA were the same as yours exept we had the 333i and our 325iS was diferent.
The big problem in SA is that the bumpers and stuff aren't readily availible what would be my bigest problem in mounting the front bumper.
We have a company that sells rear bumpers for a chrome bumper that are very similar to the Mtech ones but in fiber glass.

the front bumper on a facelift has two hydralic rams that cushion the impact (if you crash it)

The mounts would be the biggest issue As the front valence and mounting points are different on pre/post models it all depends on how good you are at fabrication but I don't think its a simple bolt on job.
Why get rid of chrome?? Its lovely

My other option is fitting 333i bumpers but as u know they did not make them in large quantities and the ones you can get bumpers from have usualy been in big shunts I know from experiance that those cars were not for a novice.
