Hi,

1st post here, so I hope you guy's don't mind me taking advantage... :)

I've come by a complete e46 interior (cloth recaro's). I can imagine it's going to be of a pain to fit into my e30, depending on how far I can be arsed to go.

I'm mainly interested in the seats (typically driver's seat wear), but may consider doing the rest if its possible. If anyone has done something like this previously, either with an e36/46, I would greatly appreciate their oppions/experience?

Thanks in advance,

James

Thanks for the heads up Dan. If I have any luck with it I'll post here to let you know how easy (hard?) it was. Maybe even some piccies...

The seats from the e46 were electric and I'm not sure of the colour coding on the wires... Does anyone has a haynes/bentley manual for an e46? If so, it would be greatly appreciated if you could have a look at the colour coding.

I will try halfords, but I recall they normally have the manuals wrapped in cling film :(

Thanks for any help,

James

I haven't had a go yet. In fact, I haven't even seen the seats, or compared them to the 'space' I have to fit them into - the car and seats are at my parents house. My dad says that they are wider, but he thinks they will go in with some custom brackets...

I will probably do the swap the weekend after next, I'll let you know how it goes :thumb:

custom brackets won't make any difference if they don't fit between the tranny tunnel and your door lol. If they're ANY (even a half inch) than the e36 ones, they're not going to fit.

It looks like the e46 seats do fit the e30. Its not entirely straight forward though... The bar which attaches the end of the seatbelt to the body gets in the way, so I'm going to have to swap the seatbelt mechanisms as well. It looks like the back seat will go in and all.

I'll post some piccies in a couple of weeks once its finished.

That is indeed sad... :) However, if you want to sink further in her estimation you can even come round and help, 'cause I live in Portmsouth too!

shout if you want help the offer's there. i know of a man extremely gifted in electrics and knowledgeable in e30s if you want that side of it helped with and he's local to us too. he's the only person i'll let touch my car - and that's saying something.

he designed my hidden aerial in my a-pillar. how cool is that?

Well... I can tell you that the front seats are in place. :o

They weren't really too difficult to get in. We bolted them in place using the existing captive bolt on the front inside edge (i.e. nearest the transmission tunnel). Then we two drilled new bolt holes on the sill sides - watch out for the brake cables though! There was no way to fit a fourth bolt, but the seats seem secure with three.

However, there were a couple of complications.

1. The seat belt fastenings had to be swapped from the old seats.

2. The bottom end of the seat belt is held in place by a bar whch bolts next to the sill. This was in the way, so we opted to shorten it and by cutting it and welding the two pieces together.

The seats I bought were electric and we found the easiest place to take a feed was from the center console cigarette lighter.

The rear seat is looking more awkward... The lower squab is fine, it wedges in place quite snugly. The back is going to cause a few headaches though.

This interior was out of a compact, so it has a split. It comes in four pieces - 2 side pieces that sit over the arches and the split seat. The seats are slightly taller, but we think we can position them in such a way that they don't rise up too far above the parcel shelf.

We are going to bolt them to the rear bulkhead. I'll give more details once it's done. The main problem will be the side pieces, which are a very different shape... They are going to need some 'modification' ! 8)

I'll take a few pictures tomorrow and post them up later in the week. It's looking pretty good already though.

Yes the electric seats work fine. Simply required a ground and live feed and joined them up using a couple of spade connectors. The only glitch that the memory doesn't seem to be working properly... I'm not sure why at the moment. Maybe there was an extra box of electronics? or, maybe I'm just not uing it properly?

The back seat still isn't in just yet, so I haven't taken any pictures. I will post some up here as soon as its finished though - hopefully after this weekend.

P.S. There's some picks of Ken's car with the e36 interior here:
