Hi folks been trwling the net and now have headache but think i've worked out what i want and need from my head unit:

Must haves:

Orange screen to match rest of car at night
I pod controller
USB port
Be predominately black in colour and not too modern and swoopy looking
Adjustable tone / base
RDS with EON

Would ideally have:

Dimable screen
Ipod and USB on front not a lead

I like the idea of Bluetooth conectivity and have found a few with built in mocrophones that make the head unit into a hands free kit. Sounds too good to be true. Do they work?

Cheers

They do work but you wont get a bluetooth one in that price range. You'll be lucky to get an ipod controller too.

I have a FLI S.W.A.T 5, cost £100 but they retail at ~£130. It has an sd card slot and usb in on the front, plus all the other things you asked for except bluetooth and ipod controller.

It has dimmable screen but I havent got mine connected. Buttons lightup red but the screen is blue. Not too 'swoopy' and its predominantly black.

Other stuff; Flip front for cd, removeable face, 4x50w, 3 pre outs, 1 Line in. Sound quality isnt going to win any competitions but its more than adequate for an un-amped system, and the pre out is good for a sub and amp if needed.

All in all, a very good head unit for the cost. (which is budget, sub 150 is very much the budget end of the scale)

Went for a Kenwood http://www.dvbcaraudio.co.uk/kenwood-kd ... 26e3261bf5

Which does almost every thing I wanted. Got an excellent service and very good price (well within my budget including delivery and USB adapter) from Michael at DVB (follow link). Ordered it at 4 yesterday and delivered at 11 this morning. Fitted it by lunchtime and also took the opportunity to fit a switch for the power ariel. This means I can have the stereo on with the ariel down (its a cabby and you get a whistle from the wind on the ariel at over 85 with the roof down).

Cannot recomend Michael enough - I gave him the spec above, he prepared a shortlist and he even held up a delivery van to allow my stereo to be put on!

Now I need new speakers and some in the rear....
