Right... in a week or so I'm spraying my car matt black... to hide a few imperfections and... well I like matt black..
Tonight in an alcohol fueled haze I had an idea..
An off centre full length stripe, in satin black... about 5" wide... from bumper to bumper...
Its quite a common thing to do, satin detail on matt paint, in the rat rod scene... but I dont know if it would just look horrendous on an e30...
opinions...

Rat look is defnitely cool... but can an e30 carry it off?
plain matt black would be more of a 'tramp' look... which is good... but adding detail goes beyond tramp to rat
If I did... I'm siding with this style of stripe..

Though this is also tempting.

Or just a plain old stripe...
hmm.... I wonder what I'll make of this topic when I'm sober

Give it a go! Could always just mask a stripe when you spray over your existing colour - would give you an idea!

Well the idea is that I can sort out the few little rust spots, fix a dent or two, then cover up my 'handiwork' with the matt black.
Then spend money on the engine until I decide whether to try and save or kill this shell.
I was hoping I'd wake up sober and have a definite yes or no in my mind but I dont, I'm still far from sure if it would look good, I want to do it, but its a big thing and could just end up looking sh*te.
decisions decisions....

Paint bomb the car first, then add the stripe.....
.....if no like, just peel it off!
Of course there is a chance you might bring some paint off with it....but this is gonna be a rat motor, so just slap on some more paint and be done!
If you're up for it, I've got some satin black vinyl (and a vinyl cutter) so if you fancy some matching satin graphics too....just give me the nod....
Regards,
Bruce.

JT - It will still be black all over... just some of it will have a different finish.
Zed - I was planning on painting it on. I've put some vinyl stripes onto a couple of cars and its a nightmare to get them all lined up, also my local supplier can only get it in lengths of 1.5m at a time for some reason so not only do you have to match up the lines but get the joins right too. I was just going to mask off the stripes once its all matt black and slap some satin on top.
And... If I spray it on, it will cost me a fiver for 3 cans of satin black... if I get a sticker it will cost about 40 quid.

Well in that case - just do it!
It'll look cool....and as you point out, nothing to stop you using another 3 cans to revert back to matt if if doesn't suit your critical eye?
Bruce.

Ooh vinyl cutter. Is that the best way of getting lettering done (as in driver names & flags, rally car style), or can you just buy letters etc off the shelf for less £Â£?ZedOne wrote:Paint bomb the car first, then add the stripe.....

Just do it - it'll be different, easy to get rid of if you change your mind, & it'll look blimmin good too IMO! I'd stick with fairly thick stripes rather than anything too fiddly, but if you're confident you can do it well...munky30 wrote:JT - It will still be black all over... just some of it will have a different finish.

Yeah thats a good point... would need some sanding down to cover the edges... but easily changed.
Sod it... Will put my order in at the paint shop.
20 cans of matt black and 5 of satin please... I swear they think I'm a nutjob in there... every week near enough I buy at least one or two cans. They probably think I'm a paint sniffer lol.

I was thinking that... do you mean vinyl cutter as in a machine that does it properly, ie you enter a design into it via a pc and it cuts it out... or do you mean vinyl cutter as in a curved stanley blade?Ziggy wrote:

this one.

It will suit the off centre look better than the first which is more of a centre stripe style.
Should be no problem to do it right, I'm fairly handy with the ol' rattle can

It wont be for a couple of weeks yet.
A friend of mine has just bought a new house with a garage and in exchange for me helping him decorate his hall I get to use the fresh clean garage to do the car. It needs to be done inside to minimise dust and fluff etc landing on it.
Little bits and bobs can be done outside on a good day, I can just about get away with spraying wheels in the kitchen, but bringing the whole car in through the french doors would be pushing the wife a tad too far.

i say go for matt black all over!
the strip down the middle sounds like the drunk thing to me.
i know you mention before about getting rid of the door protector strips down the side of the car, is this still a plan?
if done good then its ACE but sounds like a lot of work.
matt black all over!!!!!!!! if you cover the wind screen too it may improve your driving - judging by the pic in your sig.

As long as I can see out of the side windows thats all that matters
I'm going to do the stripe, not down the middle though, off to one side. (but which?!
) If it turns out looking gash I'll just matt over it.
I want a smoothed e30 touring... whether it will be this one or not is a different matter.
This is just a quick fix to cover up the poor paint and some filling of dents.
This one will eventually get a cosmos/diamond black two tone paintjob if it doesnt turn into a pile of rust before I save up for a proper respray. Mayve with shaved handles and bump strips... who knows.
I MAY smooth the bonnet and boot badges when I do the matt black though

I'm probably not quite as accurate with a stanley blade - but after a few Britney's I'd be willing to give it a go!munky30 wrote:I was thinking that... do you mean vinyl cutter as in a machine that does it properly, ie you enter a design into it via a pc and it cuts it out... or do you mean vinyl cutter as in a curved stanley blade?Ziggy wrote:

Option 2 option 2!!
Would look very cool indeed.
My dad painted his Suzuki LJ with 7 cans of black Hammerite, hammered finish - I couldn't help but think what my 318i would look like.

Did you want the 30cm ones in outline (like the ones I did) or normal 'solid'? Do you want the 'i' in 325 or not?munky30 wrote:If you could knock two of them up that said 325 Tramp Touring, 30cm long...

Did you want Tramp Drift with caps (as you wrote it?) or all lower case?

Make your choices and I'll see what I can do....
Bruce.
P.S. Personal pref is the outline for 325 and lower case for .com - but they're not my stickers to decide.....

Injection systems are nothing to shout about these days so no I... Outline looks very cool so go with that.
Just checking the TD site to see how they do it on there with regards capitals....
Its with capitals...

Many thanks
ps, dont tell TD I know the font they use and am bootlegging their stickers cos I'm cheap. They want £20 for a screen size one
actually I asked them for the font and told them it was because I'm cheap and they said ok as long as I dont intend on selling any lol
