After seeing the pics of Simon13 & Demlot's recent additions to their front bumpers, I decided I would try something I have been thinking of for quite a while.

I am using a standard 'I' lip mounted below my tech2 front bumper. this will probably look crap and cause me untold amounts of problems but I'm up for a giggle so here we go!

I started off by using blocks of wood to sit the lip below the bumper to get an idea of the work needed.

Image

Obviously the general shape is good (it is off of an E30 after all!) but there are areas that need modifying to fit the bumper correctly.

1. Centre of bumper is a more pronounced curve than the I lip. I am planning to cut small triangular sections out across the top to allow it to curve, then fibreglass and epoxy resin back together to keep the strength.

2. Corners of the tech2 bumper are a softer radius than the I lip, not 100% sure how to get round this yet. Any idea's are welcome.

Image

3. The return to the wheel arch is too short, luckily I had already been advised by Ant of this, so I have an extra lip that I will cut and join to extend this section.

Image

It's certainly going to be low enough, Hence I have named this job "project council"

Image

To get a good idea of the curve I need to work to for the centre, I placed a plank of wood under the bumper and traced the shape.

Image

Then drilled holes in the wood and bolted the lip to it, forcing it to take to the extra curve.

Image

Image

I am planning on cutting the lip with a dremel whilst it is still attached to the wood, then doing the fibreglassing to form the shape. The theory is that when I unbolt it from the wood, it should be the right shape for the bumper?

Now this could end in tears and not work at all, But at least I tried

I hope it will look good Max, Not really cost a lot if it doesn't.

Lee, Unfortunately my car doesn't have the power to back up a laguna splitter, You need at least 80hp at the front wheels don't you know

Yeah, We may have a slight problem

I have been doing all the test fitting in my garage, which is up a slope. Normally when I drive the car out I have about an inch of clearance between the bumper and the floor at the bottom of the slope. The lip is about 30mm.......

Can anyone else see what I am getting at

Yup, It's abandoned!

I had f-all clearance to get off of my drive, and it's not that steep! speedbumps and carparks would have been painfull.

Ah well, I tried

But that and the laguna splitter will look like a stuck on bit of plastic.

I was aiming for an OE look, I may still try this, but i need to make mounts that will either break away or unclip if an impact takes place.

Think of this as on hold rather than cancelled!
