which subs in a cab?

Hi

i currently have a DB Audio 12" sub which runs at 1000 watts RMS dual voice coil to be hooked up to a 1000 watt RMS Legacy 2 channel amp.

Now what I would like to find out is would i be better off running say 2 x 500 watt RMS subs or just stick with the 1 higher powered sub.

whats confusing me is ppl tellin me i will get more bass from 2 speakers rather than the 1 which kind of makes sense but its still the same power,


also is there anyone on here tht has made a box to go under the rear shelf of a cab or anybody that would kindly help me design one>

The amount of sound is only proportional to the amount of power you drive the speakers with, a 400W amp running a single speaker will provide 400W of power (well not really as its amp output ratings are based on certain frequencies but this does not matter) and a 400W amp running two speakers will provide 200W per speaker thus 400W. one bigger cone should in theory give you deeper bass than 2 smaller cones, but normally smaller cones can be driven a bit harder and thus can sometimes better (or really louder).

A second big factor is the enclosure of the speaker. i designed my box as a single ported non baffled type (i.e its empty inside) this gave according to the data that cam with the speaker a better out of car responce and a higher dB level, this is in effect what you desire for a cab, as with the roof down you are technically out of the car. My set up is similar to yours, 12inch 1000W JBL run from Infinity 700W amp, bridged.

to get this i needed a box that has an internal volume of 3cu.ft, (or 81000 cu.cm) this is quite a lot and i still wanted to use my boot so i designed the box around the space under the roof enclosure area and angled the sub.I put a 13inch x 4inch port firing to the side (the side you cannot see in the picture below) the boot is still big enough to get my wakeboard in and some bags etc.

the box is also big enough to mount the amp on ( good if you wish to remove the unit if the car is parked up in a dodgy area etc)
I was supposed to take the dimensions for another zoner but never got round to it, i will try to do it this time as my car is back in use. It also helpsd when you get a flat tyre and need to get out the spare!!!

have a look and let me know id this is suitable for you and i will do a sketch of the dimensions.

Another tip is to run the amp supply from the rear window demister supply, i will explain that too if you want. Nice cause you can tunr the amp supply on and off from the dashboard!

I always say the more subs the better, and the bigger the better. I must say though almost every 12" sub i've used on it's own or as a pair has sounded pants. But I did use four 12" JBL's in my E46 which sounded awsome

I have also had two of those DB audio subs before aswell. I take it that is the T-Rex model you have, they didn't really impress me much. I now have one 15" sub in the cab which sounds good and will be upgrading to two as soon possible.

Your best bet would be to use two 500wrms 15" subs or maybe four 10" subs.

MRLEE is your sub a JBL gt4? they are 1000watts peak and 250 rms.

hi guys thanx for the help it is the t rex i have, mr lee i would be interested in the dimensions of your box it has about three times the volume that my sub needs but if i divide the length by three i should be about right, as forinstalling 4 10@ subs or 2 15@ subs i dont think i could do this as i still need the use of my boot, although if i did do this would it giv me more bass from the same power or be louder?

oh rite cheers, would i be able to fit 2 15" in without loosing too much boot? do you have any recomendations as to which ones?

You would loose almost the whole boot. You'll have an area of about 15"x15"x12" for shopping, that's about 3 shopping bags at a push

What is your budget?

i'm on a tight budget at the moment really but things may change soon i aint got no competition winning system, all i'm really after is loud and clear

i got a 50pound twin voice coil from motorworld in my cab and it sounds good

Try making a big ported box for your sub and hopefully you should be satisfied with that.

If you have got the specs I could design one for you, and you can get the wood from B&Q and they will even cut it to size. Total cost including screws will be about Ԛ£15-Ԛ£20.

To be honest, you'd be better off running 2 subs the bass will be deeper and rounder or 1 15 inch in a decent size box at 1 ohm would be awsome. At the moment i run 2 15 inch L7 solobarics with a 1600 watts rms monoblock amp and that has serious bassline. I'd also go for 2 gauge power and earth this makes a lot of difference as it will hold the current much better for the rugged disturbing bass.
