ok its not an E30 but decided the state of my E39 was getting very poor, my mum uses it anyway after she stole it off me when i had no space to park it, and seems she has inherited it, but while they were away on leave i decided to do something about it.

the car has been run accross Saudi Arabia more then once and the paint has been sandblasted on the front, that and the clear coat was fcuked on the roof and bootlid, plus an argument with a parking bollard left it in a very sorry state. So i decided to have a go at spraying it my self, as i couldnt make it look any worse!

Started by sanding the clear coat back to the colour coat (600 wet paper and bloodied knuckles (see thread on pub talk - new found respect for body shop people).

then had the chance of an evening in a spray booth last night for a cheap deal, so i bought : 4 litres of black 668, 4 litres of clear and 2 litres of hardener, 8 litres of slow thinners, and a load of tape.

got in the booth around 6pm, cleaned the car down with water, dried with air hose, cleaned down with thinners, then masked off the lights and windows plus the other trim i didn't remove.

8pm rubbed dowm with a tack cloth and set into it.

four hours later for two-three coats of black, and two coats of clear.

only cock up was spilling a couple of drops of clear on the boot and front wing which leaked out of the gun reserviour (DOH!!)

for the record i have never sprayed a car, but watched the lads spray my cabby about a year ago, and i have done some miinor bodywork and painting on my old 318 years ago in uk.

my only regret is i didn't spend enough time on body filling /prep, but was on a time constraint due to mum coming back and the booth availablity. will flatten and polish tomorrow once it had dried and hardened.

cheers to anton for the spraying tips BTW!!

not too hard if you take your time and have a spray booth.

total cost... 100 squid for paint and materials, 80quid(ish) for the booth

have a butchers...

one and a half days to sand the clear coat off, complete car (but also changed fan clutch and oil filter/fuel filter too)
six hours in the booth( two cleaning and masking, four hours spraying), now spending a few hours massaging my sore arm!)

have left it for today and tomorrow will flatten and polish which i reckon will take another day and a half.
you're a brave man!
if you had have seen it before you would see why it was an easy choice to start it!! , and starting a job is the hardest part, once you sand off the clear you are committed!!!

to be honest it was not too hard, i think modern paint are quite forgiving and as i started with a resonable strainght and flat car (plus no rust) it was made all the easier.

i did fill a few stone chips after the first coat of black as when you spray you see EACH and EVERY dent and chip!! its quite amazing!!

will do pics once its polished (if this thread ends suddenly that means it was a disaster!!!)

Respect for having the balls to do it. I tried spraying my touring's rear spoiler the other day and made a right mess of it :o:

mirror glass yes, mirror housing and door handles no, just paint em :D ,

would advise to remove mirrors and paint seperately (and door handles for that matter
), which are easy on an E30 but require those stupid star drivers for the E39, plus to remove mirrors your need to remove the door panel as the second fixing bolt is covered

so i left em on
practice makes perfect
cheers lets see what the finished effort looks like first!!!

oh yeah forgot to say... clear coat gets you hiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh 8)

Looks like you're a man of many talents Mr Lee
as my wife about that winkeye got it out of the booth today and looks good, a few bad spots here and there so it will never be a show winner.

on advise of the guy who runs the shop i will wait a few days before cutting and polishing.
DID YOU BUY OR HIRE THE BOTH ?
unsure what you mean, i needed a cheap spray job so i gave the shop owner some cash for him to let me use his booth at night when he was closed, he agreeed. then i did the donkey work - sanding down the clear back to the colour coat. i bought the paint (Kansai paint supplied by Toyota) and clear coat (Kansai), then I used his compressor and gun but sprayed the car myself in his booth. (good idea if you know a body shop guy, offer him cash to use his gear when he is not using it, most will say yes (some may not lend you the gun BTW), i knew this guy as i had my cabby sprayed by them around six month ago, i watched almost every step so i had a good idea how to do it, i practiced for a few mins on an old knackered bonnet lying around the shop then got into it, slow and steady and constant speed of the gun over the surface is best tip, i counted 1 and 2 and 3 :turn: 1 and 2 and 3: turn, for sweeps accorss the bonnet forward and backwards, and used a similar coaunting technique for the other panels.

Not as difficult as you may think to do an ok job, but i can tell the difference between my work and their work, but the real test will be next week when i cut and polish it.

part of the reason i did sand the clear coat off and start straight away is dad had been and bought a few cans of black to do the front bumper which was sandblasted down to primer, luckily they went to China on hols before he could butcher it!!!

oh yeah happy 3000th post!!

how does the car look out in the light of day?

car looks good outside but as i said the small dents are now more visible, but there are only one or two of them. the quality of paintwork i am happy with and its even quite shiney now, we will cut/flatten and polish on monday or tuesday, i will have one of the lads from the bodyshop teach (help!) me on that one as screwing that up would really pi55 me off! The results of that will be the proof of the pudding, so to speak!

so all in all i am very happy with my efforts and would not hesitate to have another go at a full spray job as the learning curve is quite steep and i learnt a lot this time (plus some advice from zoners too!!), not saying i am an expert or in any position to give advice yet however!!!!

will post some pics once its done!!

:D 1 :D 2 :D 3 :D 4 :D 5!!!

Cliffybabe probably never looks in the Styling forum... he already knows that style=chrome, and chrome=style.

If you can find some (or similar) I recommend 3M imperial hand glaze, or machine glaze if you want to risk a polisher machine thing

I used some to improve the paintwork as I had those light swirly scratches, but it's proper use is to treat new paint after a few days/weeks.

http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... ic&t=44822

It's fantastic; but you'll be even musclier than Schwarzennegar (sp) if you have to do all of an E39

yeah saw the chrome cabby thing, not my cuppa but there you go!!

i am using Glasurit 885 fine polishing compound after 1500 wet paper to flatten the bumps casued by my paint spill(s) and bits of sand/flies that got onto the wet paint!!
its going in onj tuesday so will post pictures of the beast finished on wednesday
and yes we will use a machine for this job, certainly do not fancy hand cutting and polishing an E39
