well i have finally taken my cabby into the bodyshop for its respray and the tech 2 front and rear bumpers/valances, a few dings in the bodywork and the clear coat was knackered on the bonnet so it was about time, plus the cost of repsraying the tech 2 bumpers was silly compared to the whole car! It will also go for its new roof straight after the top coat is finished (or maybe i will fit myself  )

i have been going down every day to help them out as i wanted all the trim taken off rather than masked, and i wanted to ensure the bumpers were fitted correctly before it was painted.

So far so good, the filled the small dings and the rear wheel arch parking ding with unibond then primer then some red stuff again then sanded flat,

then we fitted the bumpers ( i have taken a fairtly comprehensive photo diary of that so i will do a tech article on tech 2 bumpers/valance, but not side skirts, give me a week or so)

then today its gone in for its first primer coat (they will do three aparently)

he also sprayed over the primer with a second darker colour very lightly which helps him to flatten..... is that normal??? :?

he is a thai guy and seems to know what he is doing, but most of the time he sprays without mask (if its something small like a bumper!!!) so he is probably high as a kite most times!! oh well heres the pictures so far

it WILL be diamond black again!!!! i hope winkeye

would appreciate anyones comments/suggestions!

it's normal to spray a light coat of a dark colour over primer - this is known as a guide coat. if you spend any time sanding back paint you'll soon appreciate its value.... it really helps to show up highs and lows. as soon as any single colour is on it always looks brilliant - even when it's crap, so guide coats are massively important.

i hope you've more than one layer of newspaper over everything - it's more usual to use masking paper - brown coloured - as newspaper bleeds through both paint and ink.

if your man is not wearing a mask i guess he's using cellulose paint? as 2-pack is cyanide based he probably won't last much longer if he's painting that unprotected.

other than that the results look good in the pictures. you're doing the right thing by going there every day - that way they can't shortcut or pull any wool over your eyes.

good luck - my guess is it will look excellent.

lookin' good, the only thing i'd be concerned with is overspray on the interior :? , would've been an idea to completely cover the "roof" bit. it should be fine if he used low pressure though

why would he be using celly paint he could be using water based paint 2pack lacquer and solid colours contain a by product of cyanide called isocyanates which kind of takes a lot less time to kill ya than pure cyanide cos im stil live and kickin! :)

cheers for the feedback guys, he did mention something about the guide coat but as i said my Thai is bad and his English is similar!! :(

he does spray the car with a mask but his mate... 8O 8O 8O

Image

Its the middle east is normally the answer ignorance is bliss, if you told these people it was bad for them it would kill em, dont say a thing and he will die at about 85!!

i will check on the paint but done forget it rains once a year or so here so Gulf spec cars paint is normally only an undercoat and a top coat (and a clear in some cases), the paint base he gets from the Toyota dealer and i think is Silkens, this he mixes (by eye!!) with a thinner and away he goes!!

But to be fair i have seen a few of their finished cars and he obviously knows what he is doing, a knackered CRX was in there and it appeared to be 65% filler, that left looking reasonable!!

i will post new piccies as i get em.

primer finished and sanded flat, i was tempetd to paint it white as i think it looks the dogs danglies, and not seen too many white cabs :D

but would mean lots more spraying in bonnet boot ect etc

so diamont shwartz metallic it will be.

here are the latest pics, should go ino the spary booth tomorrow for first black coat

cheer for all the tips lads

i have got the guy brown paper and some thinner masking tape to make the corner areas easier. and i will put a sheet (wife not happy winkeye ) over the seats etc inside to stop any spray gettin on them.

as steve pointed out the roof will be replaced so dont care about that

so guys tips and comments appreciated..

Looking good fella, changing yer colout to White would of been a Huge amount of work for yer..

Best option IMO is to keep with yer Black or put a flick in with it,though i havent seen anything i think looks any good when it comes to flicking black

Either way you just know its gunna lookie good!

looks good mate, good progress. one thing, remove the chrome bit on the hood compartment cover, as you will want to spray under it to get good finish, it seems as tho its been removed around the windows but not that.

The top coat on yesterday and the clear coat too, didn't look too good in the booth as a cat got into the exhaust fan just as he started

still once the offending feline had been flushed out of the pipes he began and all went fine until the fan packed in as he was half way through clear coat, so no doubt his life expectancy has been reduced by a bit ! but he had a big smile and obviously enjoyed his work (either that or he was HIIIIIIIIIGH  )

i managed to get some top quality scratch resistant clear coat from a mate who works at the Merc dealer so should be no issues there

so have a look..... as for the price its probably a bit cheaper then uk lets put it that way 8O (dont want to upset Giggs!!!)

here it is, bonnet and boot and tech2's should be done today

ps anyone know what the real purpose of the foam under the bonnet is, sound proofing or heat protection, and is it really necessary?

primer i am not sure.

diamond black 181 was sourced from the local Toyota dealer,

The scratch resistant clear coat was sourced from Mercedes and is made by Glassurit (spelling wrong).

heres some more this morn car finished, bonnet and boot and teckies finished, now only the finishing and polishing, its shiney as hell without the polish!

And taken with my phone camera, will try and get some real camera shots

Am well happy!

they will polish after they flatten out the inperfections in the clear coat with sand paper, but they say its best to wait three days for paint to fully harden, apparently if you do this soon after painitng it is easier cause the paint is not hard but end result is too much clear coat is removed, so this seems to be a bodyshop trick to make their life easier.
cant wait for the finished results, teckies look shout hot!

yep steve that is my other car and yes Kos they are 16x7 MK's, however was going to change em as i have a set of 16inch BBS splitties i have found in a warehouse (currently negotiation a great rip off deal winkeye)

The Mk's are nice but the missus drove around with about minus 25psi in the tyres over several big potholes and consequantly that are out of balance. The shop who did my Schitzers tried to straighten em out but still have an slight unbalancable wobble above 120/140 kph,

They could be up for sale if you can pay for the shipping to UK and know a place that can straighten alloys. TBH thay are not that bad and perfectly drivable but i fancy a change and will see what the BBS look like once they are cleaned up and on the sport.

nee feeckin botha mate, will pm you, but dont think it will be for a month or so though.

the bbs splitties are nice but they look unusual as the outer rim seems big (by that i mean the spokes seem too short) casting on the rim says BBS and the guy who has them has no idea what they are only that they are BBS (were next to a set of Gambella Cayenne rims!!)

does anyone have any pictures of BBS splitties 16inch?? (4 stud)
