What do you think of 6x9s in the rear shelf?

My iS has a set of Pioneed 6x9s fitted in the rear shelf. The person that fitted them cut away some of the steel underneath, didn't bother to use a raised mounting for them

I was thinking of replacing them with original size speakers, but it seems a waste to dump a set of perfectly good speakers.

Do you think 6x9s look out of place in the back of an E30?

I thought if the metal was cut the car was a write-off or something.

I don't think they look out-of-place, they're a good compromise for a reasonable amount of bass if you can't be bothered with a sub in the boot, especially with the problems with getting the sound into the cabin.

My car had 6x9's fitted when I got it. The parcel shelf has been cut and there is a new kind of parcel shelf in the car which allows the speakers to sit quite low so they dont stick up or anything. Looks quite good and they sound ace because they are really bolted down well and theres no vibrations! So yeah I think 6x9's are good as long as they are fitted properly.

i think the best thing to do is remove the old speakers and replace them with newer speakers of the same size

the cross members at the back of the rear seat back are structural and shouldn't be removed without first re-inforcing that area. the rear shelf can be cut away pretty much to nothing. i know because i took advice before cutting mine.

Ahh i remember my old E30 had its orginal speakers in the rear, it was soon sorted out with a saw tho

I'm sure I read somewhere that cutting the rear shelf compromises the rigidity of the chassis and so the car can be declared unroadworthy by an MOT tester.

Though as nobody's backed me up I'll accept I'm probably wrong.

it's possible what you say but there's 3 points worth considering:

rear shelf inspection is not part of the mot process and most testers give as little time as possible to each motor so as to fit as many in as possible so it's not likely it will be examined.

mot testers only test the car and issue a certificate - either a fail sheet or a pass. (they do not 'write off' cars. that's the preserve of people from insurance campanies.) technically any car that gets issued a fail sheet is then considered unroadworthy, even for a failed door lock or empty screen wash resevoir or indicators that flash too fast or rear seat belt inertia inoperative or, well you get the idea. any metal that's been cut could be kept and welded back into place just like any other part of a compromised chassis.

before cutting anything structural any sane or at least half way sensible person would re-inforce any area to be compromised. mot testers are not concerned with the exact design of a vehicle and thankfully we are not yet living in an age where anything modified fails its annual 'government sponsored inspection.'

They look the part,son. Got a pair of jvc 6x9's 4 ways in mine and there 10 year old and still pumping hard,but my shelf was removed,metal was cut, sound prof... and mdf shelf was made and leather in black, but the sound is spot on with losts of bass. ( friend thought i had a box in the back, he lost a Ԛ£20 bet) true story

I have 6 x 9's fitted to my rear shelf, but they have been raised by 18mm so i would not have to cut/bash/dent the rear cross member.

Unless you're some kind of "has to be factory spec" guy then I'd say leave them in. they sounds better than *anything* you could do with standard sized speakers.

Personally I hate 6x9s because of their rep.. I even call them chav by nines but I couldn't deny upon listening that it was the best (on a budget ) that can be done for the rear of an e30. I fitted mine on ply-board so no metal cutting involved, also meant I could sound deaden the backs.

They were in my car when i got it, they are very good sony 4 way ones and i recomend them to anybody!

rigidity of the e30 , have you ever tried to open a door on two door when the front wheels expecially are jacked up, try it and you will be surprised how rigid this chassis is!
