Ok,ive got a 10 inch sub and 360 watt amp i want to put in my 318is to improve the sound a bit.

Ive got all the wiring ready to fit,the only thing stopping me is how to mount the sub to the ski hatch?

Do i have to mount it to an MDF panel and fix this in place or do i just bolt the sub to the panel direct?(wont this just earth out the system?)

Sorry for the dumb question,im no expert on ICE obviously

Anyone got any pics of how theyve done it?

Thanks fellas.

PS great to be back on the Zone, wanted to ask this question a couple of days now,but didnt think id get the right answer elsewhere- to the Zone

Fitted two straps of wood (one at top and one at bottom) to the metal panel behind seat. Sub was then secured onto the wood strips.

Cool, nice original touch with those speakers in the armrest.

Won't you need and open air sub to run it like that?

Open air sub??? A sub is a sub to me - all I now is that my set up sounds good and is adequate for my needs.

Most subs are designed to run in a box with a certain volume, this give optimal performance and durability.

However some are designed to run with out a box to save space.

KEDGE-fook me mate, where do you put your shopping? 8O
If i put anything like that in the boot, her indoors will go skitz when she turns up at Tescos and opens the boot to put the bags in,plus ive got to keep room to fit a pram in there in 7 months

TAYLOR-exactly what i want to do,although im not sure about the speakers in the arm rest

Is your sub secure, does it vibrate only mounted on 2 struts?
If it doesnt i think ill copy how youve done it,looks good cause youve left the original cardboard panel in there.I was going to recut that after the sub was in,but your way seems a lot more logical :D

Thanks for the replys fellas

if you can seal the front of the sub to the cabin you'll receive all the sound it makes rather than anyone sitting in the boot. if you can find your way clear to fitting some dynamat to the rear seat back before fitting the sub it'll all sound better too.

a plan for you might go like this:

remove the rear seat back and boot trim on the other side. remove the ski hatch panel if it's still there.

dynamat the rear seat back, once is ok, both sides is great.

find a furflex door seal and cut it down and fit it around the ski-hatch opening. niiice touch....

cut an mdf board and bolt very securely around the ski-hatch. screw/bolt your sub box/enclosure to this. modern subs require very little air space which means sub boxes are small.

trim the lot using a matching second hand boot carpet and you missus will never even realise it's all there.

refit the seat and marvel at why anyone ever pays ice dealers for fitting.

yep you could do it without dynamat for sure but the rear seat back panel will vibrate in sympathy with the sub, losing you both volume and sound quality. it's 15 quid retail for a roll of standard dynamat so not an overly large expense. alternatives include 'brown bread' (from maplin), painting on some fibreglass resin or even some roofing/underseal tar - they'll all 'dampen' the panel. dynamat is the market leader and has the added bonus of being easily removable.

if you decide against using any dynamat then cutting some thin mdf (4mm or 6mm) to fit in the indentations of the seat back panel and glueing/bolting them in place will also deaden it. probably cheaper and certainly easier to fit a roll of dynamat though.

if you were a bit more local i'd offer to come and help and bring some dynamat for you but torquay is a bit of a trek.....

Thanks for the replys fellas

The sub is also screwed to the metalwork on each side and is solid - no vibrations. I'm gonna trim the wood with some black vinyl or something similar at some point to hide the fact that it's two straps of wood (one of the many jobs on the "to do list")but under normal circumstances it's covered by the bit of trim anyway - it was only removed for photo purposes.

As for the speakers in the arm rest - I thought it was an original idea and I think they look cool. I've got a spare armrest if I change my mind anyway.

Good luck with your install. :thumb:

Placey, thanks for the info mate, very useful.
Think ill buy a roll of it then if its only Ԛ£15ish,but where from?

Taylor, yours does look good, but ive just bought 2 sets of speakers and im not buying anymore  to put in the armrest!
Does look good though, just want to bass up the sound that ive got really as it sounds ok,but i listen Indie music most and just want to highlight the
background effects that the 4 x 13cm speakers cant produce.

Thanks for the advice fellas :D
