speaker problems with modified setup

Hope this is the right forum for this post.

I bought a cabbie a few months back that has an after-market stereo, amp and speakers . The speakers don't work particularly well, as some don't work and you can hear some of them cutting out and new ones begin working randomly. Sometimes when going round a roundabout the "working" speakers change from one side of the car to the other. Has anyone had this problem before?

I'm a novice to stereo speaker wiring, so don't really know where to begin. At first I thought that some of the speakers were broken or that the wiring was bodged. after messing around with the stereo settings I found that depending on the settings different speakers would work. Any idea where to begin?

I've been sorting other stuff in the car up to now, but the sound is now the next item on the list.

Ideally I'd like to remove the amp and get it as close to original if I can, however if it's just a case of installing a new amp in its place then I can certainly live with that. I just want the speakers to work normally.

fowler, cheers for the reply. i'm in twickenham so a bit of out the way for you. i'll begin by looking into the amp. maybe much easier than replacing all the wiring.

mods - looks like i have posted this in the wrong section. how do i move it to the ice section?

i had that problem but it turned out to be faulty rca output from the head unit. Dont know what your setup is so cant really tell, pics would help

Hey mate pics would deffinetly help but it sounds like you have a faulty fader switch in the dash
I had this problem when I first brought mine I got around it by cutting the switch out all together.
When I get home I will take some photos for you. But the main thing to check*if you indeed do have the fader, mounted above stereo with a scroll on it* is to remove the footwell cards and tap into the blue/brown and blue rear speaker wires (right hand side) and yellow/black yellow/brown for the left

Do you know a little about the setup in the car? ie are the speakers running from the headunit or are they amped up? If its cutting out it sounds like a wiring problem, speaker cable or cables may have a break somewhere or the wires are not connected properly to the speakers, (come loose) or to amp etc.

Bit hard to diagnose without knowing more exactly how its setup and as above pics would help.
