Hi Guys, I'm currently investigating putting some 8" subs in the rear "door cards" of my convertible. I seem to remember somebody on here had done this, but cant remember who it was. If anyone has any ideas or pics that would be a great help.
Cheers Chris.

I was going to do it, actually made a start, but it looked crap and it didn't sound good anyway.
I know it's boring but put the subs in the boot and do it properly.

I had the subs in the boot, but due to the reinforcing of the cab, and the rear seat its all a bit muffled, and with my new boot build there's no where to put them that leaves the boot tidy and useable apart from the spare wheel well, the rear 3/4 panels, or the glovebox, and I'd quite like to keep that free as I now have no door pockets....
Have you any pics of your creations? you could email me them if its easier, saves you hosting them....
Cheers Chris

Why not put the subs in a big ported removable box?

I could but due to the position of the new amp rack it would have to go right at the rear of the car, which would a, cover the spare wheel well, making it difficult to access, and b, certainly won't help the handling.
I think I'll have a go at it when I get some spare time, and enough motivation...
Cheers Chris.

But if you make it removable like I said, you can take it out if you need to access the spare wheel.
Extra weight over the rear wheels was not an issue for my old convertible, if anything it gave more traction at the rear.
Just do it

If you add cotton wadding to a standard sub box, it sharpens and deepends the base it turns out, that may be a cheap was of testing to see an improvement.
Can get cotton wadding from tailors, or dressmakers, etc.....

It does work, especially if the subs are mounted in the boot.
It also depends on the size and spec of the sub you are using too, but apparently 80% of people who do it, notice an improvement.

What are you advising to do, put wadding in the doorcard subwoofer mount?

I've currently got the subs in a sealed box, complete with wadding and it definitely does make a difference. I did it with my potted 10s before and it helped there too. It works by breaking up the sound waves from the rear of the subs and fooled the subs into acting like they're in a bigger box.
The subs I'm using only need 1ft3 each sealed hence why I thought about the rear 3/4 panels.
Chu346, do you have any pics of the ones you started?
Cheers Chris.

I know wadding makes a difference and can make an improvement in some cases, but I don't see the relevence on this thread.
The reason they sound bad is because the woofers are playing in to the unsealed metal door panel and the otherside is in free air. So there is no loading on the speaker and not much sound as a result. Also the size of the enclosure will be too small for the speaker.
I don't know if you have many people in the back of your cab but with subwoofer pods you won't be able to fit two normal sized people in the back. It will go from a two seater to one seat in the back lol.
I'm sorry I don't have any pics.

i find that my subwoofer is muffled too, would cutting a hole in the metal behind the seats and parcel shelf be an option?

i have 2 inphase xt12s and a fli 1000 monoblock in a double L shaped ported sub, my car is a coupe and i was thinking the other day maybe the metal was holding in all the bass, i put my head in the boot to get something and it just felt like all the bass was being wasted in the boot cuz its all closed off.

Have you tried facing the box in a different direction?

In the coupe, take out the trim panel in the boot (and maybe the rear seat?) and you should see the markings for the ski hatch in the middle - you can smack that out with a hammer

I have a coupe too, my 12" sub fits in no worries.
Actually my sub and amp are in the for sale section. Not wadded the box though. Works well, just setup for added bass, not a huge thump in the back, just to accompany normal co-axial speakers that give no bass what so ever.
