Not sure if the mods want to make this a sticky but I've noticed quite a few threads now from people asking "what headunit would my e30 have come with when new?"

We have to remember that back in the day, BMW charged you for every option or "nicety". More often than not your car would have come with a blanking plate where your would have expected to find a series of knobs and buttons that when you fiddled with, music or speech would have appeared!

Therefore almost all of the headunits that your car's had when new were either dealer fit from the options below OR the original owner drove the car (in silence) to a place like Road Radio where some knob would molest your very expensive new cars loom, just so you could listen to your newly recorded Wham cassette. Or if you were a rich yuppy, your CD's.

So here goes.

JAN 1989

Dealer Fit KEXM700 with GM1000 amp and CDXM100 6 disc fitted to 325i owned by Paul "the diddler".

==========================================================================

APRIL 1990 Note:

The GM1000 amp above does not show on the accessories listings for 1990 and the Pioneer KEXM700 and CDXM100 has been replaced by the M800 and M70 respectively.

The typo under the Pioneer KEH 4000RDS. I believe this should read £513

Any Pioneer with the prefix M before the unit ID number was compatible with the newly introduced "M" series of CD changers (of which I have an M30 version with 2 6 disc cassettes in my loft winkeye )

The Pioneers DEH (a single CD Headunit) and KEX were component units, i.e. you needed a seperate Amplifier to power them.

The "Stalk Equaliser" was a Blaupunkt (one of which Barry has awaiting install in the infamous Sport)

And heres what they look like.

and although not a dealer option, a very few got one of these if your city bonus was healthy in 1990. The infamous, iconic, legend that is. the NEW YORK

and the top of the range KEX M800 with it's CD changer. These were bloody HOOOOGE and took up half the boot!
Remember "£1275 sir to put in your 325i" hence not meny got them!

Good post. :D

Back in the mid-'80s, I worked for an auto electrical firm and one or other of our mobile fitters was almost permanently at Kingsworthy BMW (sadly no longer, AFAIK) fitting Pioneer stuff in new cars.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

OKAY. HERES A PLAN.

If anyone out there has accessory brochures from OTHER years and can scan them. Send the scans to me at tmal.white@btconnect.com and I will upload to the original post. See if we can get a copy from every year of manufacture!!!

Then we have a quick view of what came in what year.

I also plan to find images of various units available at the time for reference.

Thanks Ziggy.

Glad people think it's of use.

I'm gradually getting photos together of the various head units available. Will post as and when I find examples.

Dave. Thanks for the brochure. Excellent reading but no head units that I could see :? . Will make a nice addition to my file though :D

Was that dealer fit Paul? If it was then as I suspected, the available choices changed almost yearly.

Mo. Certainly looks to be period. Whether it's a dealer fit option though I need to see the accessory list.

Ironic thing is, In 1984, I bought a Pioneer KE6300 (with a bp520 equaliser)for my Grananda. It always bugged me that I didn't go for the KE7300 as it had green illumination. The 6300 had orange.
And theres you needing orange and the pioneer you have has green.

I've just found a KE6300 on eBay. It would be mint in an '84 323!!!!

The Blaupunkt Croydon (Memphis SQR88) will be adorning the sport along with a BQA80 amplifier very soon!

Not 100% sure if i want to use the BEQ S2 stalk EQ yet as im not sure where to mount it so it looks nice.

I'm sure the Blaupunkt New York is to early for '90 Trev, i think its circa '86,'87.

Oh, and the Mephis SQR88 works with any MP3 player/iPOD (tested this week, youtube vid to follow!) as it has an aux in on the front! :D

Didn't realise the Memphis was the top model either.

Awesome thread Trev!

So the KNACKERSmingy is going then Barry?

The New York went on longer than you think Barry. They even did a CD model although the design did change later. The SCD08

It a coincidence that you started this thread as for the last few weeks i've been researching old Blaupunkt Audio as in what was available, what works with what and what can be made to work with other audio like MP3's and Ipod's etc.

Been checking out Pete's stash of Old skool Blaupunkts, Beckers and other stuff.

That New york tape deck is an SQR 83 and dates from about 1983 so would be correct for '83, '84, '85 '86. It was also know as the Köln. It also llacks alot of the features that the later SQR88 has.

There were other New Yorks, like the SCD08 cartridge CD player (Pacer has 3 of these!) and even throughout the '90's and 00's there was a New york of some sort.

The thing with Blaupunkt is the some models (more so with stuff from the '80's) had different names for different markets.

For example, the SQR88 was badged as the Memphis for the UK, the Woodstock for Germany.

I need accessory brochures for all the years of e30 (up to '93 for the verts and tourings) except '90.

I doubt we'll get a definitive list but we can do better than that.

Barry, I reckon you are about right on the New York. Mate Marcus had one in his Mk1 GTI which was an '83 Y. And that car was 18 months old when he bought it. He also has some serious old Alpine kit including the pull out head unit, speakers and amps he had fitted at Road Radio in Epsom into his brand new 1989 325i 2 door.

Trev, my sport had an Alpine 7179LS pull out tape deck and a pair of Alpine co-ax's fitted in it from new (which i still have).
The orginal owner obviously didn't fancy forking out £500-£1200 on a radio from the dealer so went else where. Where i do not know.

From page 13 of my sport thread.
bss325i wrote:This is a Blaupunkt Memphis SQR 88 which was one of the higher end units available at the time. The good thing about this unit is that is has a CD input which happens to be a 3.5mm jack lead socket so i can use an ipod and not have to listen to tapes from '89!

Image

Findind an SQR 88 is hard enough but fining it with these other two items is dam near impossible! Here we have the BEQ-S2 remote equaliser and BQA 80 4 chanel amp.

The BEQ-S2 is on a flexible stalk which is mounted somewhere like the centre consol and is very 80's but also very pointless! I guess it save chopping up a centre consol or dash in an E30 though.

Here's a vid i did today demonstrating the ipod compatibility and the tape function of the SQR88.

The two songs you can hear were in the charts in '88 and '89 which are very fitting for this head unit!

The SQR 88 also has an 8 pin DIN input on the rear so you can hook up a Blaupunkt CD player or changer or with the right lead, anything really.

They also have an 8 pin DIN amp output to which you can get a lead to change from 8 pin DIN to RCA phono so you can use any amp, not just the Blaupunkt ones.

My mate's old man had a well optioned E23 735i back in the day, which was originally specced for Tom Cowie of Cowies garages fame. So it was well loaded down with morsels. It was on a B plate I recall.

It had the EQ stalk mounted on the right hand side of the transmission tunnel and the tuner on a separate stalk mounted on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel so they sat about level with the heater controls/ near the top vents. There was a cassette only unit mounted in the usual stereo location in the dash. I recall the cassette deck you pushed the tape in face first (with the exposed bit of the tape away from you) rather than the traditional side on way.

That Pioneer KEH9000 RDS gives me the horn
