Are you talking about the dynamat type stuff. I started applying this today. You apply it to the metal panels behind and around the speaker area (or everywhere if your rich/going OTT) To deaden the sounds/quieten road noise/reduce vibration. Here it is applied to the rear wheel arch below my rear speaker.

If you mean the way the fronts mount, you are right Blitz - they would sound better 'sealed' in!!
None of the speakers i've used recently have fitted properly and i keep thinking about making something like a 3mm mdf mounting plate, that exactly fits where the front speakers mount. I'd then seal that in and mount the speakers on that!!
It's a nice idea, but will i ever get round to it..............

Couldn't give an example of weight, but it's not light!!!!!
Having said that, i doubt a bit behind/around each speaker would be noticed in anything but the lightest stripped out machine!!

was thinking about making a europe cruiser with a touring and a 2.7 and was thinking of using something like this to help keep the noise levels down, along with other fancy ideas.

I want to sound proof my 2002 - is dynamat worth the cost. It is a fair bit more that similar other brands but is recommended by the legendary Chip Foose

if you do go downt the dynamat route buy the dynamat extreme stuff like seen in the picture above by mr cool.
there are 2 types, the standard cheaper type which has no aluminium backing and the extreme with the aluminium backing. i found the standard dynamat started falling off after a few months so i had a pile of soundproofing inside my doors that rattled about. i bought the extreme stuff to replace it and it lasted 2 years with no issue and is still stuck solid but it does cost a fair bit.
