Aerial cable

Not getting any kind of radio reception at all, and the stereo doesn't find anything on an auto scan.
The aerial lead seems ok and is connected correctly.
Is there any way of checking the cable and or aerial, to make sure its capable of recieving signals?

only way i can think of would be whip the stereo out, pull the aerial plug out and try another aerial in the back of the stereo without fitting it to the car to find out whats wrong
