Evening all,
Looking to replace my 12" sub. It's connected to a Kenwood and an Alpine amp.
Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

How come you have two amps powering one sub? not heard of that one before, i would say get an Alpine Type R, for the money no other sub comes close.
I've recently upgraded from a 12" Vibe sub to a Alpine Type R and its such a step up

To be honest I don't know.
This is the set up when I bought the car and I haven't changed anything, a kenwood headunit, an alpine amp under the passenger seat and a 12" sub (don't know the make) hooked up to a kenwood amp in the boot.
The car also has a dash mounted TV unit with a video player in the boot so I suspect that one of the amps (possibly the alpine) is hooked up to that and the kenwood hooked up to the sub.

You've probably got a 4ch amp running the speakers and a 2ch/mono running the sub.
As pac said, the typeR subs are awesome. but you need a very good amp to run it.
A sub reccomendation depends on your budget and what you want from it, as in, do you want bass that will rattle your brain or just a nice little kick?
If the later, then you can get subs from £30 at 400w rms which would fullfil your needs.

No offence but they are both quite puny amps, ideally you need a decent mono block amp to power a decent sub, so if you want to use those amps i would be looking at subs for under £100 as anything better would not used to its full potential without better ampsJustin325i wrote:This is the amp I have in the boot...not my picture though.

None taken. So what sort of amp would be suited to the Type R? Or should I just go for something like a Type S sub?

The square l5 you can make your box into a square hole, or go for a rockford P1 or a diamond D1 thats in ure budget and would run off your amp fine.

The Alpine MRD M605 is ideal for powering a type R sub, unfortunately these amps are no longer available to buy new but they are practically indestructible so don’t have any worry’s about buying a used one from evil bay.Justin325i wrote:None taken. I also use an Alpine MRV F450 5 channel slab amp to power my speakers which is a really nice high end amp that gives a really warm feel to your speakers.
I would really recommend a type R sub as a lot of 12 inch subs struggle to put out a nice punchy bass and are more suited to really loud and low bass notes but the type r is a really good all rounder which sounds nice when you have your system on low added a subtle hint of bass but also is capable of dropping really big bass notes and making your whole car shake.
The best way to spot a good sub is to check the size of the magnet out and the one on the above sub does look a little on the small size, plus it looks like it may be a paper cone sub which is never a good thing, but in all honesty I’ve never heard of the so it could be a really good sub.Justin325i wrote:Anyone have any experience of a Hertz DS300 sub??
Heres a few pics of my system note the size of the magnet on the type R, I’m also running both the amps I recommended above, it looks a bit of a mess at the moment as it needs a good clean and the false floor is not sitting right as I’m currently having my spare wheel re painted

If you want a good price for straight up ground shaking bass, go Power Acoustik. Most 12" subs run a max output of 1200w, but PA 12"'s run 2400w max, with around 1000w rms. Like said before, you need a good amp to push this power out. I have a 15" PA, running I think 2750w max/1800w rms with an 1800w amp wired up with a 1.5 farad capacitor. I even blew one of the voice coils, and running off one coil, my boot lid, rear fenders, and rear face all "wave" with the bass. Not just vibrate, but has that wavy motion going on.

Very true, the wattage on my Alpine system aint that high to be honest but it would piss on any of the cheap stuff you see with 1 million mega watts printed on the side.kam325itouring wrote:why does everyone jump on the wattage bandwagon???? Thats another point stay away from cheap amps i would rather buy a used decent amp than a new cheap amp

Wasn't trying to the OP to jump on the wattage bandwaggon. Just stating that the best (key work:) quality, while getting awesome bang-for-your-buck, is the Power Acoustik setups.

Best quality would be some proper old skool Rockford/Phoenix Gold/Hifonics/PPI amps.E30_Crazy wrote:Wasn't trying to the OP to jump on the wattage bandwaggon. Just stating that the best (key work:) quality, while getting awesome bang-for-your-buck, is the Power Acoustik setups.
They don't have "Bullshit" power ratings and were made with quality in mind, using top notch components, and not built for minimum £££ and max profit.

Man, some good 'ol pheonix gold bits of equipment sounds really good to me!... Just finding the good condition, high quality stuff anymore nowadays is nearly impossible. All the pro's and the collectors have already snatched up most of what remains...

Getting back OT, I'd be looking for a sub by JL,Rockford,Cerwin Vega.
The spec of the amp suggest 2x100w rms@4 ohm or 300w rms @4 ohm bridged.(Kenwood site)
If you intend on keepng to just 1 sub, then you'd be looking for a sub which handles 300W rms and 600W peak.
