Finally got round to making up a loom for the stereo (from a butchered one I got at a scrappy and an ISO connector I had laying about) plugged it in and plugged my (borrowed) HU into it and everything worked! Panel lights, memory etc...
However when I put the cage into the space for the HU it just fell through as the hole is 8-10mm bigger than the cage, so I assume that I'm missing something or is the space in an e30 not a standard DIN size? When I got the car it just had a blanking plate over the hole but there was evidence of a stereo being there previously.
Also I want to install some rear speakers, I can't (and don't want to) have them on the rear shelf as I've got a Baur. So they have to go to the sides but I'm not sure that the cards are strong enough to support some decent sized speakers (I have some 6x9s that I was planning to use) and there is very little to mount them to behind the cards. So has anyone else installed speakers there and what did they have to do?
How to fit rear side speakers

Ok, ignore the first question. I've just been looking at fascia panels on eBay and they all have a slightly recessed lip around the hole for the stereo... which someone has quite carefully removed from mine.
