Has anyone converted the rear speaker pods to mini subs? i want to improve the bass quality but don't want a sub box in the boot as i need all the boot space for our dog.

I'm not after anything fancy or expensive I just want to be able to enjoy music in the car. Current setup (what was already in car) is a sony headunit and it's currently wired to the original speakers in the rear pods and a set of infinity components at the front mounted in the normal position. The HU has one pre out for a sub.

I do actually have a JBL 12" sub box with a 2ch amp running mono and another 4 channel amp that were all in my saloon but don't want or need anything this big now (I'm getting old now lol)

Any tips advice etc would be really appreciated :thumb:

The rear enclosures are too small for any current subs.

The only thing you could do with them, is ditch whatever speakers are in there and fit some components.

The pods will accept a 4" mid and there' room for a tweeter in there too.

Put a set front and rear of the most powerful speakers you can get, then amp them up as head unit push's out so little. Replace wire in bmw with thicker grade audio wire will also help and as few as join's as possible, as power is lost at each join. Buy cheap get cheap also with speakers etc :)

Try doing this, you can still mount the amp in the right hand storage area............(not my car)...

mm I had the idea of putting one in the spare wheel well but with the wheel there it wouldnt fit. Didnt think of raising the floor. That has to be the way to do it! Maybe sinking it down with a grill over it would be safer.

You could just remove the spare wheel altogether, seal the wheel well and use it as a sealed or ported enclosure.

Should be enough volume for a decent 12" sub

I'm liking the spare wheel well idea guys  is there any good reading around regarding sub design as I know there is a lot of science behind them.

What have you guys done regarding the rear speakers? I went and brought myself some little 2 way 10cm speakers and they're too deep for the pods.

Cheers

MB Quart comps in my rear pods.

2 12" subs in bespoke enclosure directly behind the rear seat and false floor to hide the amps etc.

Typically a 12" sub requires 1- 1.5 cu ft but best to check with the manufacturer for the optimum sized box as it differs between sealed and ported ones

I've got JBL 2ways in the front footwells & I have infinity 10cm components in the rear pods .
I also have an Infinity Basslink subwoofer with amp to install, but still figuring out the best way to install it without it getting in the way.
