i run a 10" sub in my cabby, the sound is perfect not too bassy like some hatchbacks, the sub has to be turned right up on the stereo and the amp to hear it though. Also the speaker must be facing the back to give better sound if you have not done that already
you think weve got it bad my girlfriends mx5 has an amp 2x as powerful as mine and the sound is shocking, no bass just thumping when turned right up, somthing to do with the sound having to travel through the fuel tank i think!

it does not really matter which way the subs point as low frequency waves are omnidirectional, i.e they do not appear to come from a single point, so a sub in the enclosed boot will make no difference which angle or direction it is placed.
There is no way to get around the additional metal in a cab, and it should not be cut as it is structural.
If you cannot hear it then either the sub is not propoerly enclosed in a sub box, or the amp running it is of poor quality/badly set up/not big enough for the sub.
below oyu see my 12 inch set up in the cab, it is very bassy and in fact is too bassy for the speakers inside the car so it is turned down.

Positioning of the sub can be important, especially if it's in a ported box. With my old ported sub box the bass almost disappeared with the box in the wrong position in my touring. Strange as I wouldn't have believed it, until I heard it.
