In my baur the speaker set up is as follows....
5.25's in the front footwells and 5.25's in the parcel shelf
This is ok with the rood up, however with the hood down it folds over the back speakers, leaving me with 2 effectively.
So....whats the best way to get the good sound sans roof...?
I dont really want to butcher the car to much and FYI my headunit has one preout thingy (amp?)
I know diddly about ICE so any tips welcome, ta.
Best way to get the best sound

Hi,
I would install an amp, powering components in the front and a small subwoofer in the boot.
That way you get the bass from the rear and have the mid and high range at the front.
I have just upgraded from standard front footwell speakers to components (with the tweeters in the proper BMW tweeter pods) and the difference is amazing.
If you don't want to install a sub then you will have to make do with the bass you get from the rears .. but bear in mind that bass isn't directional.
Hope that helps.

Futher to GDBN's info add a 2x 8inch subs and will get a nice clean base line also face the subs to the back of the seats not away then you should get a nice sound.
Im currently on 2x 10" subs on 2000rms good base then alpine 13cm speakers for mids and high's very nice sound and equal accross the car

Do some sound proofing at the front - bit of dynamat or similar behind the speakers and around those panels, and make sure they are very solidly mounted. Maybe even mount them on an mdf ring.
This will make sure you're getting the best out of the front speakers you have got.
Next would be to add a small amp for the front speakers, instead of running them straight from the h/u.
Then if you still want more - an upgrade for some good front component speakers!!
A sub is a good idea, as it will give you a much better, fuller sound - you can also take the speakers louder as you will be filtering off the low frequencies that would normally cause distortion.
A good sub doesn't have to be loud and boomy - it should be well integrated and barely noticeable (until you turn it off!!)
Personally wouldn't bother with any rear speakers in most car installs!!!!
