Folks,
I bought my touring without a head unit, and now I'm hoping to fit a pretty basic setup to get me going. I've got the harness to run from the accessory socket above the glovebox to the back of the HU (ends in an ISO plug) and it also has the ends that you hook up to the speaker cables.
The problem is - I can't find the speaker cables!
What colours am I looking for for standard? Or if it had super duper cables in before that have been removed does anyone have a link to a muppet's guide to wiring in some more?
cheers

What is hooked up to the speakers in the front kick panels? Do you have speakers there or did the PO take those out too? It's super easy to run new speaker wires to the fronts. Kind of a pain to get them to the back speaker pods.

If your planning on keeping the car for a while (im assuming you are) why not run new cables thru yourself? decent cable isn't that expensive and will sound much better than some 20year old brittle cable.

OK, I think I've found the original cables - cut off and tucked behind the heater controls. They're just bare ends at the moment - what is the best way to hook them up to the ISO connector i've got in so far? Last time there was a choc block connector with the so I cut off the flat black plug at the bottom of the image and used that. Is there a better option? Or what is meant to go into that plug anyway?

As for new cables - they might well happen sometime, but not until I've got new speakers and possibly a sub.

edit: Oh yeah.. does anyone have the colours for the original speaker cables?

Original speaker wires are Green, Purple, White and Grey. +Black on one of each for polarity.

By the way, you need to swap the orange and yellow cables on that ISO loom as although they are the correct ISO pin layout, the E30 for some reason has those 2 switched around - your HU won't power up until you do so.

You're totally nuts to not put new speaker wire in now - it will take you the same time to do as fishing and splicing in the old wire - if it's even there.

The black connector you cut off is for adding in speakers via spade connectors for ease of removal etc.

But again, easier to pry out the the ISO pins in the main block, and slot in new pins that you've already soldered/crimped onto fresh speaker wire - this way you have a continuos solid connection.

All of this is moot however as the acoustic space and thus sound in an E30 totally absolutely sucks.

Haha, yes - I've already fallen into the power cable trap :) I worked it out when I found that the head unit would only power up with the sidelights on :)

The existing wires don't appear to be the same colours you mention so I'll probably run new cables to the fronts at least. I don't think I can face ripping out the trim all the way to the back right now. I like your idea about putting cables direct to the ISO block. I'll have a look for some pins.

I know the sound will never be great in an E30, I'm just after something that works and can generate enough volume to drown out the engine on motorways ;)
Cheers

I got mine off ebay, but I got the previous one from Halfrauds. They had to order it in but it only took a couple of days. I'm sure the are available online too.

HU working!
minimally, but working.
Someone had already replaced the speaker cable to the fronts, which I've now found and connected to the ISO connector with crimp connectors. So I've now got a HU connected to one pair of speakers using the internal amp. That is, I admit, a pretty crap setup - but we can only go up from here :)

The plan (I say plan, probably daydream) is
New Head Unit £179
http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/hamburg_mp68.asp
Front speakers (I have no tweeter pods in this car)
http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/spkr1_3.asp £44.99
Probably the same again for rear speakers - need to check if I have the optional speaker pods installed and if I can bodge 130mm speakers into them.
Maybe a sub if I save up! £100
http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/spkr0_2.asp

I'm not into shaking houses, or powering a rave from my boot - but I do like a bit of music on long trips. I know blaupunkt are far from fashionable but I'm really just after solid reasonably priced kit. I really like the features on that head unit, its an updated version of the one I have in another car.

What do you think?
