i sell sat-nav for a living soooo.....
GARMIN!! absolutely all the way!!
the key names are essentially:
garmin
tomtom
navman
navman are pants, in short just pants. tomtom spend millions on advertising a year and are good units dont get me wrong but alot of 'how good they are' is down to word of mouth reputation. i could tell you the returns address for tomtom off the top of my head!
garmin, we get very few back, and when i say very few, 75-80%ish of the units i sell are garmin because thats what i recommend and we may get back 2%?
garmin are what all the majority of planes in the sky use and the boats on the water.
anything with teleatlas mapping on it... stay away. you can buy garmin units with navtech (the most accurate and reliable mapping) on them for the same money!
