Thanks. It has crossovers as well.
in that case you will need the wire then, didnt know it had inline crossovers

I use the wire supplied to wire the speakers and tweeters to the crossovers, then connect crossovers to car's wire.
Oh and the crossovers are separate,

So I connected the speakers and sound is coming through. But they sound awful. Little or no bass and it crackles.
Sounds like somethings wrong?

Checked all the connections are there all secure. Also compared to the last speakers these speakers need much a volume setting. And the headunit dims in and out.

Could it really be faulty speakers?

just hook them up to speaker outpts on a stereo and see what they sound like
are both crap sounding, have you tried both sets of crossovers, one could be faulty

Blitz: Sounds like the crossovers are wired wrong, ie. tweeter connection going to bass cone and bass connection to the tweeters, might be worth a punt lol
Wanted: Any old component speakers, complete or separate parts, let me know what you got

I connected one of the speakers to the AV and it sounded fine a bit crackly at top end but that's because it was the only speaker connected and the AV receiver outputs 6x120w and volume was much higher set then normally.

To be honest I feel the problem is with the cars head unit or wiring.

is the wiring original, with an adaptor harness??? or chopped and re-wired to ISO plugs??
My thinking is, if one set of speaker wires is the wrong way round at the head unit, it will obviously be wrong at the speaker. If this is the case your speakers will be running 'out of phase' giving a quiet (your volume needing turning up much more), distant sort of sound with no bass, and will very easily distort (ie your crackling sound) too. Imagine if you will, running your AV reciever in pro-logic with music and only the rear speakers connected, should sound pretty similar LOL

I don't know if the wiring is original but its wired to a Sony head unit which was made after E30. I'm guessing the wiring has been messed around with.

I had some strange sounds with my 325 - ended up re-wiring it, didn't take too long and sounded loads better! Fitted some Dynamat to the front speakers while I was at it

Previously owned loads of old E30s, E34s, a few E36s, E32s, E39s and an E38.
Currently in a diesel Audi - miss me old E30's....

i've just bought a pair of the same speakers as you blitz, and was wondering how did you get them to fit in the footwell space as the holes for the screws don't line up and it looks like it sticks out quite a bit too...

Blitz - can you not get some new cables in there and rewire it?
It's really cheap and you get to know your car a bit more but removing bits of seat/carpet etc
Check each speaker 1 by 1 and make sure the polarity is correct, you'll be surprised
Rather that than get some mooron to check it for you!
