I've spent the last couple of days stripping out the interior of my touring for a rust check and noticed that the factory stereo loom is still in place but has been replaced by some crappy mickey mouse wiring
. The factory wires for the rear speakers end with a connecting block that won't fit on the speaker terminals, so what's missing?

Have the rear speakers been upgraded? Hard to tell without a photo, I know stereo wiring but not BMW looms.
Normally they are just little bits of metal sticking out from the speaker and the terminals just push on. Could you just get some universal ones and crimp them on?

Right, I get you now, so you are missing some kind of connector. Could you make something, or just cut the black plug off or are you trying to keep it 100% original?

Have a look on here, its not exactly your car but might help, from what I can see they just plug in, maybe it had an amp or something. Think you might drive yourself nuts, you could just do a quality job to fix it and then forget its not oem.

As daboy says - it's likely it was at some point connected to an amp - sounds like the sort of plug they used to connect h/u speaker outputs to amps, when the oem, or a cheap h/u, didn't have proper phono/rca outputs!!!
If it's been added to the original speaker wires and you want to keep them, I would simply snip it off and crimp, (or even better, solder) some new spade connectors on, to connect back onto the oem speakers!!!
Personally, I would replace/upgrade the speaker cables, even if you're not going to use an amp!!!
To be fair though, unlikely you'd notice a difference with the sound, but would just give peace of mind against the old cable breaking down!!!
