I currently have a kicker 1200.1 monoblock running a sony 15".

The problem i am having is that when i turn up the volume on the kenwood headunit i am getting dimming lights and then if i go up a touch higher the power cuts to the stereo and the amp.

Heeeeeeelp

May be the amp going into protection mode, which would be better than the alternative!!!

Could well be that the amp is not getting the required voltage so rather than overheating or blowing fuses or ruining speakers, it shuts off for a bit to give the electrical system a chance to recover.
If that is the prob (you need to monitor the voltage during heavy bass!!), can be caused/cured by things like alternator, battery, cabling - are they working to their optimum, can they keep up with the demand??

I am of course assuming you've checked fuses!!!

Just googled that amp and it is the biggun i was thinking of!!
Depending how your running it, they can push 1300WRMS - which is a lot for a standard E30 electrical system!! I think for my own peace of mind i would be running a second battery for that on a split system!

What are you running from it? And what load?
If you're testing it, it will struggle - and they can be damaged by low voltage!!!

aggreed with mini blob on this one sounds like not enough juice to the amp and going into protection mode as rob said second battery or power cap it for big bass drops...
are you running speakers of head unit ????
asa this can also cause head unit to go into protection as internal amp can't handle the speakers :D

True, h/u could be being pushed too hard, which would have the same effect!!

Wouldn't bother with a power cap though!! Used them, read about them, never seen a gain personally and most people don't rate them!!

Second battery has always seen me right, and i've pushed a few amps in my time!!!!
The Orion setup I had in a Granada scorpio used to stall the car on certain frequencies because they idle low and it put a massive sudden load on the electrics that it couldn't handle!! And that was only a couple of thousand RMS through four 12"s - lol!!
