I am considering doing a stroker build as a final year project. Originally i wanted to stroke an M42 (i drive an iS) but it looks way too expensive. So stroking an M20 looks like a much better option. Just wondering how much the parts cost? I live in Ireland so would have to source things like the crank in the UK. Never even saw an eta here. Is it hard to find one? It seems like a simple enough project but sounds a lot more complex, ideal for a college project. Also is it easy enough to find the parts and build one from a 2.0 litre or is it better to start with a 2.5. Thanks

If your trying to save yourself money build a 2.8, save on having to find an ETA and all the other machining that goes with the 2.7 build.
The 2.8 means finding a M52B28 crank (of which you should be able to find one in ireland!), then machining a spacer and finding some M20B20 rods, then gaskets, seals and sundries. The its a case of putting it all together with a M20B25 block head and pistons. Shouldn't be too hard to source, I managed to find two cranks over here in the space of a week.

Yup. you retain the 325i head, block and pistons. As well was anchilaries, managaement isn't as much of a arse as people assume either, there is a motronic chip allready written for the 2.8 build.

Starting with a 2 litre block would be better, means having to get the bores machined out to 84mm but they will be in perfect condition for a new set of piston rings

Ok now the hard part, persuade two lecturers to let me do it. What sort of torque and horsepower would that engine be putting out when finished?

You can expect the same sort of figures as a 2.7, thats if you complement the head with a BBTB and freeflow air filter, 6branch manifold and decent exhaust. so around a safe guess not knowing how exactly your going to go about it is 200-220bhp similar sort of torque figures too. Infact the build could potentialy cost less than the 6 branch and BBTB on their own.

I doubt you'll get much help in that respect, could you not find an enthusiast in ireland that will pay you to build it for them?

Everyone loves a tryer
Might try that but it will be hard to part with it after putting all that work into it. Might be able to get some cheap engines the get parts from though.
