i'm in the planning stage of turbo'in my m30 3.5 at was wondering if there's an exact science in making an ally intake manifold like the ones used on big power supra's/skylines???

pic below of what i mean,

http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/ ... 984_866457

i know that it's smaller at the back cause of fuel/air problems at the rear cylinder.

cheers

Andy.

The M20 manifold in your link is ok but where are they going to fit the throttle bodies ?

Cheers,

How much power are you aiming for?
Unless it´s really really serious, the stock manifold flows very well.
With great challenges comes great engineering.

Just one big throttle goes on the end. Fine for use with a turbo and a very low overlap cam but should imagine it'd run like a sack o' crap with a bit of overlap on there!

andy put a picture of the turbo up :D
people will see the game plan - but it may distract from the issue in hand???

doing a 'unna' special there with the mani, just block it in steal, they say the flow is not as important as a N/a engine.

are you going to do some CAD drawings?

Flow isn't perhaps as important, but the better all of your system flows, the more power/psi you should see.

can these be used on a non-turbo car?

No reason why not, except you'd have a nightmare if you went down any N/A tuning routes (mainly the cam)

in what respect mate? would there be any kind of bhp gain running on a basically standard engine?

imo i would say no. you want a tubular mani for a N/A engine (even a turbo engine it would be better) but flow is essential for a mani and the standard bmw is good but a tubular mani is going to give you more power.

I'd say that the shorter runners would likely as not move the power band up out of the range of standard components (not necessarily a hard and fast rule though) and that the charge robbing would give you a cack idle and low speed drivability if you had lots of overlap.

My feeling is that the shorter runners and bigger plenum would make the problem of high overlap cams worse than perhaps the standard long runner intake but I don't have anything to back that up.

You could always use the standard manifold and fit a bigger TB to the other side like my twin 60mm TB, it will be handy for the intercooler piping having the TB on that side, it's also away from the hot side of the engine so less heat pick up.

It's still not a five minuet kind of job but might give you another alternative to consider ?

yeah andy i do like the look of your new manifold and it would save me making a complete new one from ally, any chance you can remember what engine the throttle body came off?

does it make any difference now with the new one on?

gonna go and speak to me mate that builds drag racing cars for fun (1400bhp supra, 1000bhp skyline, 1200bhp mk2 cortina) all are road legal and very very fast!!!!!!!!!!

cheers

I got it off US ebay for about £40-50 inc shipping and taxes, i think it was off a Ford V8 Mustang of some sort but there's plenty of them on Ebay.

I've not got the engine mapped yet to suit the TB but it does seem more perky, it will probobly benifit(sp?) you better as you will be making more power and need to flow more air which ever TB you end up using.

The one slightly PITA thing with this TB is the TPS spindle isn't the usual "D" shape it's a flat blade type thing(blue part in the picy) you will either have to find a TPS that will fit and be able to work with the ECU you use or make an adapter.

I was very gratefull to have some one from here to make me one up, see below.

I almost forgot, you will also have to re-locate the PAS res' lower which easily done with an E36 res' bracket or mod the E30 bracket to suit.

Have a look in the for sale section as Toby is breaking his turbo M30 with the M5 throttle body set up.

which ones ? crank case breather ?

The crank case breather pipe on a stock M30 goes from the rocker cover to the rubber bellows inbetween the AFM and the TB.

On mine the breather goes under the manifold and connects up to the underside of the black G/F elbow

I'm not sure because there's a lot of work gone into them to get them fitted.

Just bog standard M5 TB's/plenum arn't cheap.
