your very limited,
FI is the only viable option aside from engine swapping or getting a 325i or 335i already.

oi why does everyone say that! gunni you've seen sam's 200bhp+ NA engine and mine's not too bad either. There are other options, sure they're not necessarily as easy as with other engines, still viable though.Gunni wrote:your very limited,

It´s a cost vs HP ratio.
plotted down 200hp from a M42 na style is not going to happen that easily while 200hp from a turbocharged m42 is easy and simple making way more low end and overall drivability. A stock M42 with turbo only can reach 250hp easily.
I also said your very limited, meaning sources aren´t that much for information.

Well, 1st thing to do is to buy a chip from M5 pilot anyways. That'll probably give you the best bang for buck that you'll ever get from the M42 for only a 100 quid and 5 mins work to put it in
Then, you can decide do you want more after that
Could get a JE flywheel too that'll make a nice difference to acceleration although they are pricey.
The sky is the limit if you have deep pockets. 500bhp would be possible if somebody went crazy with a turbo conversion.
But the engines are far from being limited to tuning. They are just as capable or maybe even better to tune than any other N/A engine imo.
Obviously engine swaps will always be the easiest way of increasing power substantially for a given cost..... but where's the challenge in that

M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream

The worst is that it can´t go that large in size.
Otherwise it´s one nice engine.
