Hi
im swapping my M40B16 engine with a M42B18 one.
the Engine is a 1996 M42 engine from a E36,
wiring loom, ECU, and MAF are from 1990 E30
1. Can i use the M40 engine mounting arms and mounts with the M42 engine?
2. Can i use the M40 flywheel and starter with the M42 engine?
3. Can i use the M40 MAF or must i use the M42 MAF?
4. Will the stock M40 exhaust pipes fit to the M42 exhaut manifold?
thanks
Ron.

ok,
thanks for the replies.
a little update:
1. finding out @ M42Club there was this guy that used his M40 engine mounting arms and mounts with the M42 engine, according to him the M40 arms keeps that engine about 2-3 inch behind the front wheels, making wieght disturbution better.
2. when stating i can use the M40 starter motor and flywheel with the M42 engine - does this mean that its a straight bolt-on, just move the starter and flywheel from the M40 to the M42 and connect the Getrag240 gearbox? no modificaion to the Clutch? TB?
3. ok
4. that is a bit of a pain, can i fabricate ones myself? will E30 325 fit in and work ok?
thanks again
Ron.

You've answered a few questions that I wanted to know also, well as far as i'm aware If your running on m40 wiring you wont have knock or lambda sensor wires to plug them in, and you will need to use the m40 afm as only the m44's had maf.
Best bet would be to find an m42 wiring loom and use the knock sensor, lambda and afm from the m42 engine as well as the relevant wiring,
As far as an exhaust goes the standard m40 needs bending and i think lengthening to be of use a 325 one wont fit,
the clutch depends on wether the original m42 had a dual mass flywheel, if its just a standard flywheel then you can use the m40 clutch and flywheel. The blocks are near enough the same on the m40 ans m42's so you shouldn't get problems if your using the stsarter aswell. I remember someone mentioning that the props are different between the m40 system and the m42 i.e the m42 one being a little longer.
Just get someone to confirm all of these or just to say that i am totally wrong.
Just doing my bit.
