I'm considering upgrading the 318i cabby.
As I'm a total novice regarding engines, I'd appreciate some advice regarding where to start. The M40 has been no problem, but I'd like to put something bigger under the bonnet.
If you were in my position, what would you opt for, and why.
Much appreciated.

I would and am going an M30 for various reasons. Do a search and have a look at all the conversions people have already done as ultimately it's up to you.

Hi Turbo or supercharge the m40, (mini superchargers are cheap) or swap in a m5* as you can use the existing gearbox.

oh the choices are endless depending on price.
we had a massive talk about this on another cab and it came down to a m30 i think as it was the best to cruise around in?
easy driving with the m30 is great but the m20 would be much easier as the engine mounts and exhaust are there ready and will be way cheaper.

depends on how much cash you have spare to spend on the project but if its power your after whatever engine you choose make sure it f/i for easier cheaper future power upgrades. if your thinking about non bmw conversions budget for £5000+. whatever price you get quoted for any conversion ,double it as that will be more like the final cost once its up and running.
