Just picked up my SS race centre section after it failed only after six runs! (not Dans fault)

Ive had to get it fixed and enhanced so that it wont crack again (thats the plan anyway)

I had the crack repaired (one of the exhaust hanger welds cracked on top and bottom clean off!) and also had a O2 bung put in for good measure.

I think the guys did a good job the bung was £10 from tech edge.

Anyway has anyone else had the same problem with the SS race centre section?

Take it those little bend tubes are to hang it from or something are they?

Who did the welding out of interest? (Pro or friend or other?)

Hi,

Demlotcrew- Super Sprint are well known for cracking on the
brackets.

Its a design fault that they seem reluctant to alter.

Your fix will resolve the issue.

What made you position the bung in the 'X' Pipe ?

As the exhaust gases are scavanged and the 'x' pipe assists in
removing them, a more central location for reading purpose may
have been better ?

What temp will the gases be at this location ?

The Gorilla.

Yeah those little tubes are the exhaust hangers which hang off the sub frame. The work was done by a local firm which I can only guess do this everyday as there was a two week wait but they managed to get it done in one week.

They also added the little triangle reinforcements as i didn't want the cracks to come back but also didn't want to loose ground clearance. I hope it holds as its very thin gauge stainless which is why I think It failed. The first time round.

Do you think the work is upto scratch?

Hi,

Demlotcrew- Thin Gauge Stainless Steel is fine if welded correctly,
which yours looks to be.

Super Sprint crack the brackets due to their being no ''flex'' in
the centre section, which asborbs the torque movements of the
engine.

Your additional bracing is what they should offer in the first instance.

If anything you may ''bend'' them a little now with some
spirted driving but they should not break.

The Gorilla.

Thanks G,

Good to know ive gone down the right route etc.

Re the O2 bung, well there was no real reason for putting it there except that seems to be the done thing with some of the other more senior S14 people in the community and i just went with their experience. With regards to the temp at that point then i would hazzard a guess at it being the highest down the whole exhaust system?

Thanks

Andrew

I think the 02 sensor was wise.. Are you planning to go to an after-market (thats bad language in your vocabulary isn't it?) ECU in the future then?

To prevent further cracking I suppose you could get loads of heat into the welded areas and cool it very slowly (by adding incrementally less heat over a period of time).

I nearly bought one of these exhausts to bastardise for my S50 conversion a little while ago. It went for £210 on gaybay and I missed it!

Good stuff otherwise.

Well yeah thats the plan, DAD is in America for two weeks and ive asked for his hotel address winkeye lets hope all the parts get to him before he checks out as ive been a bit busy and left it to the last min!

I need a O2 sensor and ive also ordered a few ETG bungs to go into the pipes so ill get the same guys to weld those in too as they done a good job on this.
